District Bistro at 11230 Grandview Ave in Wheaton-Glenmont (former site of Umberto’s), will begin its soft opening on Friday, November 3, at 5pm. According to owner Pedro Matamoros, District Bistro is a new American concept that is focused on “seasonality and use of local ingredients.”
District Bistro shares its location with sister-restaurant Frank’s Burgers, with Frank’s on one side and District Bistro on the other, united by a kitchen in the back. A copy of the menu can be seen below.
Per Montgomery County: “The Montgomery County Commission for Women will be presenting three classes on “Introduction to Self-Defense: The S.A.F.E. (Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange) Seminar.” Each class is a single two-hour sampler seminar for women of all ages and abilities taught by Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.)-certified instructors. Classes are available on Thursday, Nov. 16, Tuesday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Dec. 3. Classes are $12 per person.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) have responded to the 12200blk Veirs Mill Rd., near Randolph Rd. (in the area of Korean Corner), for a collision involving a driver backing a vehicle up into the building in the Stoney Mill Square shopping center at approximately 5:30pm.
The vehicle primarily hit the entrance of Quickway and partially hit the entrance of King Pollo. Several units have responded and a building inspector has been requested. One witness has claimed that a driver hit another car before backing into the building. No word on injuries or a cause for the collision at this moment. The 4th Great Montgomery County Bike Summit takes place Sunday afternoon, October 29, 2023 at the Wheaton Library and Recreation Center, 11701 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20902, organized by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA). Media representatives are invited and may register via the summit Web page, waba.org/MoCoSummit2023.
This free event will advance the cause of safe biking for all across Montgomery County. It will bring together policy-makers and advocates for presentations and panel discussion, charting progress toward building out the network of trails and protected bicycling lanes and meeting the county’s and State of Maryland’s Vision Zero commitments.

Over 50 Himalayan cats and kittens have been found in the Wheaton area, most of them near the Sligo Creek Trail or in Wheaton Regional Park since late August (some were also found in nearby neighborhoods). Citizens have been engaged in an active effort to search for these cats and kittens and report sightings. Yesterday, the Montgomery County Cat Coalition (MC C³) stated that more cats are still on the loose and continue to be found:
“Wheaton area residents, we need your help in locating any more of the dumped Himalayan cats that are still outdoors. Though many have been rescued, some of them are still out there and these cats continue to be found. Email [email protected], if you see one of these cats. We are grateful to Dr. Hannah Levy and her staff at Cozy Cats Vet: A Cat Practice for the initial exams and treatments.

HalloWheaton (family oriented), Sunday, October 29, 12-4pm, Free Admission: Get a jump start on celebrating Halloween in the Wheaton Arts & Entertainment District for free s’mores roasting, pumpkin painting, costume contests, Halloween crafts, face-painting, photo ops, and more at HalloWheaton. This is the 3rd annual HalloWheaton event at Marian Fryer Town Plaza, 2424 Reedie Drive. Adult activities include a beer garden, fire pits, yard games, and a zombie trailer.
Westfield Wheaton Mall (11160 Veirs Mill Rd) and Montgomery County Police will host their 2nd annual Boo Bash on Sunday, October 29 from 12-3pm. According to Westfield, “this free Halloween event offers festive fun for all ages including a safety stage show, costume contest and a card and candy donation design center (in partnership with the National Institute of Health) benefitting children who are unable to trick-or-treat this year. Attendees can get creative with cupcake decorating, pumpkin painting, and witnessing a “zombie apocalypse” via social media. After getting down at a family dance party, enjoy trick-or-treating throughout the mall until 4pm. All activities will take place in the lower level Macy’s Court.

Dunkin’ will be taking over the space that was previously home to $2.49 Cleaners, at 12196 Georgia Ave. in Wheaton-Glenmont, on the same block as Trippy’s Tacos and Seafood in the Buff and near Popeyes. An opening timeframe is not yet available for the store, but it appears the store will have a drive-thru (or at least a walk-up window) based on the renderings in the featured photo.
Dunkin’ has been making a big push lately in Montgomery County, with new locations at the Layhill Center (14328 Layhill Rd) in Silver Spring and in the Goshen Crossing Shopping Center in Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village, where it has taken over the former Capital One Bank building at 20000 Goshen Rd. Last December, we let you know that Dunkin’ is continuing its massive expansion across the country and within MoCo, and there are currently an additional four locations in the works with more likely to come.
