Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office: The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Office of the Attorney General today released the dashboard and body-worn camera footage from the fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on July 22, 2023, in Montgomery County.

 


Per Montgomery County: The reggae music of Jah Works will conclude the Wheaton TGIF Friday summer concert series on Friday, Aug. 25, at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza, adjacent to the Wheaton Business Triangle and near the Wheaton Metro Station.

The event will feature live artist demonstrations and beverages from Twin Valley Distillers. The TGIF party will begin on the plaza at 5 p.m. with a DJ set followed by a live concert at 6 p.m. The after-party will rotate to nearby local bars from 8-9 p.m. Parking is available in the building at 2425 Reedie Dr.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) and Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving an overturned vehicle on Georgia Ave, near Plyers Mill Rd in Wheaton on Tuesday, August 15 around 4:30pm.  No additional information is available at this time. Per Westfield: Westfield Wheaton will host the annual back-to-school fair in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 26 (two days before students in Montgomery County are scheduled to report back to school on Monday, August 28). The event will take place in The Streetery, the center’s outdoor event and dining space situated between Macy’s and the food court on Parking Level 2. Shoppers and members of the community will have the opportunity to enjoy family-friendly activities while learning more about the school system, county programs and receiving free curriculum resources.

This year’s 2023 Back-to-School Fair promises to be an even more dynamic and informative event. “We are so excited and look forward to welcoming families to the new school year,” said MCPS Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police have arrested 29-year-old Ricko Ford of Capital Heights and 30-year-old Wayne Pitt of Gaithersburg, for attempting to steal a Ride-On Metro Bus the morning of Friday, August 11, 2023, in the area of Connecticut Ave. and Georgia Ave. in Wheaton.   At approximately 12:27 a.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for report of a carjacking.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the male driver of the Ride-On Metro Bus picked up Ford and Pitt at the Glenmont Metro Station in Wheaton. Ford and Pitt told the bus driver that they wanted to go to Greenbelt. The bus driver told them that the bus was going to Montgomery Mall. Ford and Pitt approached the bus driver, and one of them told the bus driver he wanted the bus. The bus driver got off of the bus and walked away. Ford and Pitt are then seen attempting to drive away in the bus.


Per Montgomery County: The Wheaton Arts Parade organization, which is constantly expanding its range of activities, will sponsor two upcoming events including a guided tour of its artists “pyramids” that are placed around Brookside Gardens in Wheaton on Saturday, Aug. 12, and a “Yarn Bomb” at the Wheaton Library on Sunday, Aug. 13, that will lead to decorating the Wheaton area in creations of knitted and crocheted works.

The “Guided Garden Tour of Pyramids” will be part of pop up art activities at Brookside Gardens from 9 a.m.-noon on Aug. 12. Brookside Gardens is located at 1800 Glenallan Ave. in Wheaton.


Montgomery County native Josh Hart is finalizing a four-year, $81 million contract extension with the New York Knicks, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The 6’4 guard is considered one of the best rebounders at his position, averaging 7.8 boards per game last season. In 2021, Hart signed a $38 million deal with the Pelicans before being traded to Portland and then to the Knicks where he helped guide the team to the NBA Playoffs last season.

Josh Hart grew up in Silver Spring. Prior to transferring to Sidwell Friends in D.C., he attended and played basketball at Wheaton High School. He grew up playing basketball for the Montgomery County Bearcats, where his coaches praised him for his heart at an early age. He made the varsity basketball team as a freshman at Wheaton, eventually becoming a starter in the second half of the season. Even though he transferred to Sidwell Friends and played there the last three years of his high school basketball career, his ties to MoCo remained strong. His mother has been a long-time employee at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville and his father is a retired caterer.


Per MCDOT: The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), in collaboration with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), is offering adult bike classes in September, October and November. The classes include both Learn to Ride and Basic Skills classes. MCDOT also will offer four free, walk-up scooter classes following select bike classes.

Advance registration is required to participate in the bicycle classes and cost $10 for Montgomery County residents. There is no charge for WABA or Capital Bikeshare For All members. Bicycles and helmets will be provided at no charge for the adult Learn to Ride class participants and can be rented from WABA, if needed, for the Basic Skills class participants. Scooter classes are free of charge.


At approximately 10:04 p.m., Montgomery County Police officers responded to the 11400 block of Georgia Ave. in Wheaton for the report of a carjacking that just occurred. The
