On December 4, 2024, the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) led a multi-agency traffic safety initiative along MD Route 355, focusing on aggressive driving, pedestrian safety, distracted driving, seat belt compliance, and impaired driving.  The operation, involving approximately 60 officers, resulted in 382 traffic stops, 165 citations, 330 warnings, 19 repair orders, two impaired driving arrests, and enhanced pedestrian and commercial vehicle safety enforcement efforts. The Takoma Park Police Department has shared that on or about December 20, 2024, north and southbound traffic on Carroll Avenue will be limited to right turns only at the intersection with University Boulevard (MD 193) for approximately five weeks.

Update: A multi-vehicle collision, including a tractor-trailer, occurred on southbound I-270 between Montrose Road and the I-270 Spur around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26.

According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, one person was trapped and extricated from a passenger car by emergency responders and was transported with Priority 2 trauma. Some lanes remain blocked as of 4pm.


The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has begun a $5.2 million safety and resurfacing project on a 2.76-mile stretch of MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue), including upgrades to sidewalks, traffic barriers, signage, and drainage systems, with completion expected by next summer.
