Maryland

Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office: Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and a bipartisan coalition of Attorneys General from 31 states and the District of Columbia to enhance competition and protect consumers in food and agricultural markets, including in grocery, meat, and poultry processing. The new partnership will assist the coalition of Attorneys General in tackling anticompetitive market structures in agriculture and related industries that are raising prices and limiting choices for consumers and producers.


Ashton

Olney Winery has been operating since 2012, initially as The Winery at Olney. The winemaker was located at 18127 Town Center Drive in the Fair Hill shopping center in Olney until September of last year. In 2016, expanded and opened a tasting room in the stone house at 12810 Shank Farm Way in Hagerstown. Last week, Olney Winery opened its new space at 52 Olney Sandy Spring Road in Ashton Market. In addition to wine, they’re also offering pizza at the location.

Rockville

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and Dill Dinkers is opening a second Montgomery County location in Rockville, just six miles away from its recently opened North Bethesda location. The Rockville location will be at 40-C Southlawn Court, next to ZavaZone and near the Sportsplex and Ice Arena.

Dill Dinkers offer a wide array of options for getting out on the courts to play, including court reservations for members and non-members, clinics, leagues, and lessons for new and experienced players looking to improve their game. Dill Dinkers will also offer advertising opportunities within the facility for businesses and organizations looking to reach a large, active audience focused on healthy living. Germantown

A Germantown man is $50,000 richer after purchasing a winning Bonus Match 5 lottery scratch-off ticket from the Sunoco gas station at 19738 Germantown Road in Germantown. Full story below courtesy of MD Lottery:

“A lucky Montgomery County man likely received the best birthday gift of his life after buying a Bonus Match 5 ticket for the July 18 drawing. He won $50,000 just in time for his birthday festivities. The 48-year-old found his lucky ticket at Town Center Sunoco, which is located at 19738 Germantown Road in Germantown. He purchased one $4 ticket, replaying numbers from a previous drawing. The Germantown resident works as a contractor for AAA and uses some of the money he receives as tips to purchase Lottery tickets. He walked away this time with a far larger prize than in the past.


Crime

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County of Police – 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating a commercial burglary that occurred on May 30, 2023, at the News & Valet shop in the 1300 block of East West Hwy. in Silver Spring. Detectives have release photos of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them.

At approximately 8 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the location for the report of a burglary that occurred earlier.   The preliminary investigation by detectives has revealed that while the store was closed, between Friday, May 26, 2023 and Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the suspect broke the lower window of the store, with a rock, went inside and stole an undisclosed amount of merchandise.

Takoma Park’s National Night Out (NNO) event will take place on Tuesday, August 1st from 6pm-9pm at Piney Branch Elementary School (7510 Maple Ave). National Night Out is an annual event hosted by the police department to bring the community together as a whole to increase awareness in safety and crime prevention; to support locally-based businesses, groups, and organizations; and to strengthen relationships among the community members and between the community and local police department. Update: The victim has been identified as 81-year-old Christl Pedro, of Poolesville. 

Per MCPD: A woman has died following a traffic collision that occurred on Thursday, July 20, 2023. At approximately 9:31 p.m., 1st District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the collision in the 18900 block of Beallsville Rd.


Education

With student scores in math and reading having dropped significantly across the country last year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s States with the Best & Worst School Systems, with Maryland coming in 8th as a state (this report does not reflect individual county rank, but rather the state as a whole). Neighboring Virginia was ranked 5th (where Maryland was ranked in 2022).

In order to determine the best school systems in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 32 key measures of quality and safety.
