MoCo Libraries

Per Montgomery County: The Wheaton and White Oak libraries of Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will offer several free animation, graphic novel and mini comic book programs for ages 10 to 50-and-over in July and August. The animation workshops explore the history, science and creative possibilities of animation. Participants will create three optical toys: a thaumatrope, a zoetrope strip and a flip-book.

The graphic novel classes teach participants to create a graphic novel page using all the conventions of graphic novel storytelling: narration, dialogue, character design, dynamic page layouts and cinematic techniques. The mini comic book workshops teach participants to write and illustrate a brief fictional, factual or a combination of both that will become six-to-eight-page narratives using one folded sheet of paper.

Restaurants

Chipotle, which opened a new digital-only restaurant at 13801 Outlet Drive at the Briggs Chaney Marketplace in Silver Spring earlier this year, is bringing the concept to the Rock Creek Village Center in Rockville. The new concept, also known as “Chipotlane,” has no dining room and requires you to order through the Chipotle app, rather than the traditional assembly line format Chipotle is famous for.

The restaurant will open in the space that was previously home to Sun Trust Bank, joining The Creek Lodge Bar, Villa Maya, and more in the shopping center. According to Chipotle, “guests and delivery drivers can collect their digital orders through the Chipotlane drive-thru or walk-up window.” An opening timeframe is not yet available.

The proposed re-development of 5500 Wisconsin in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has been given the green light by the Montgomery County Planning Board. The project by Carr Companies and Donohoe Development is a mixed-use development that will include 360 apartments, 45 moderately priced dwelling units, 11,000 square feet of retail space, and underground parking. 15% of the apartments (45 total) as Moderately Priced Dwelling Units, for professionals who cannot afford the traditionally high rents in the community, such as teachers and first responders.  This will be the only building in Friendship Heights Village to offer MPDUs.

The development has been in the works for several years and has undergone significant changes and revisions to meet community feedback and address concerns raised by stakeholders. Donohoe Development worked closely with the community and the Montgomery County Planning Board to ensure that the project met the needs and expectations of all parties involved. Site Plan approval was received in April 2023 after Donohoe Development and Carr Companies received full support for the project from the Friendship Heights Village Council, and final plans were submitted to the Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission.
