MCDOT/Ride-On Releases New Trip Planner App

Montgomery County Department of Transportation has released a new mobile app to plan your trips using Ride-On busses. “Download the free, easy-to-use Ride On Trip Planner from the Apple App store or the Google Play store. It’s fully functional.” In the app:

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) partnered with Moovit, a global bus trip planning mobile app software company, to launch a new Ride On Trip Planner – a Ride On bus passenger load and local trip planning app. This new, innovative app allows riders to plan their next trip and to tell how crowded a Ride On bus is – before it arrives – with the crowdedness indicator on the app riders can choose if they want to get on the bus arriving, wait for the next bus depending on how many people are on the bus, or choose another travel option, such as other local transit services, bikeshare, and scooter. It gives riders more control over their transportation experience. The app also includes dashboards for the Ride On Central Communications team to monitor bus loads and more quickly dispatch additional buses when buses are full.

Black Bear Spotted in Burtonsville

A black bear was spotted in Burtonsville in multiple areas including a photo that was taken by Keaton Stavely on McKnew Rd, off of Rt.198, on Tuesday morning. Many Burtonsville residents stated they also saw the bear in different areas.

Last month there were multiple bear sightings in Chevy Chase, Kensington, and Rockville, with one bear that was trapped and relocated by the Rockville City Police Department and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on May 8th.

Fernando Santiago of Silver Spring Selected as Winner of 2023 Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival Poster

Per Montgomery County: The poster for the seventh annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival will be based on a design submitted by Fernando Santiago, a Silver Spring artist and resident. As the winner of poster contest, he will receive a cash prize of $500 donated by IHOP Wheaton. The poster contest was open to all residents of Montgomery County. After Mr. Santiago’s artwork was selected, Wheaton Arts Parade designer Josue Martinez of Corinto Gallery incorporated it into the design for the poster and T-shirt. It will be featured in all promotional materials leading up to the parade.

More than 50 festival tents are available in the 2023 festival for artists to rent to exhibit and sell their original artwork and for arts organizations and community organizations to promote their work. The day is inspired by the parade and the closure of roads so that people can pull giant floats and show off their art, play music and dance,

The World’s Largest Pickle Party Returns to Maryland in September

The Big Dill, which describes itself as the “#1 Pickle Party in the World”, returns to Power Plant Live! at 34 Market Pl in Baltimore on September 23 and 24. The two day event will include pickle sampling, concerts, carnival games, a pickle eating contest, a brine chugging competition, and an appearance by “Dilly” the pickle. Pickle flavored cupcakes, donuts, fudge, ice cream, and pizza are a few of the items that will be available for purchase at the event.

Per the Big Dill: The Big Dill World’s Largest Pickle Party® is the premier pickle event of the year, featuring a pickle garden with 10+ handpicked artisan pickle companies sampling and selling a variety of pickles from all over the country. After the festival, attendees will receive a survey to vote for their favorite pickle company that will win The Best in Show. Entertaining guests throughout the weekend is a modern country, pop, and rock-themed live stage production with performances by musicians, actors, comedy routines, and choreographed dancers. Guests are also entertained by the crowd’s favorite, The Pickle Eating Championship featuring competitive eaters and the hilarious Brine Chug Challenge.

MCPS Give Back Packs Returns For its 12th Annual Campaign; Over 10,800 Backpacks Provided Last Year

Last year, through the generosity of businesses, foundations, associations, faith-based organizations, educational institutions, staff, and community members, MCPS provided 10,823 students with backpacks and school supplies through its MCPS Give Back Packs campaign.

Over 70,000 MCPS students receive free & reduced-price meals and many families struggle to afford basic necessities like school supplies. Your donation plays a critical role in helping ALL students thrive academically, while helping to support beginning of the school years costs for a parent in need. MCPS places orders throughout the summer with a goal of providing as many students as possible with a backpack and supplies at the start of the school year.

KID Museum is dedicated to expanding access for the MCPS community by providing free opportunities to participate in our programming. “Thanks to the generous support of Montgomery County Public Schools, all MCPS students and families can register for free admission to KID Museum through June 30, 2023” (registration link below).

KID Museum opened last May in its new flagship site at Bethesda Metro Center, 3 Bethesda Metro Center, Suite 140— a brand new, 28,000 square foot facility “created to foster the “Mind of a Maker” and empower the next generation with the skills to invent the future.” The state-of-the-art makerspace is purpose-built for kids ages 4-14 to explore coding, robotics, engineering design, and hands-on maker learning, with the capacity to welcome more than 100,000 visitors every year. There will be grand opening events, becoming a member, or sponsoring us to help all kids discover a love of exploring, creating, and collaborating to become makers of the future.

New 227 Area Code Takes Effect This Month

To ensure a continuing supply of new telephone numbers, the Maryland Public Service Commission has approved an all-services area code overlay for the 240/301 area code region which serves all or portions of Aspen Hill, Bethesda, Bowie, Frederick, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Hagerstown, Potomac, Silver Spring, Waldorf, Wheaton, and many other small communities. The new 227 area code will serve the same geographic area currently served by the existing 240/301 area codes.

What is an Area Code Overlay? An overlay is the addition of another area code (227) to the same geographic region as an existing area code region (240/301). The overlay does not require you to change your existing area code or phone number, or how you dial your calls. You will continue to dial the area code and phone number for all local calls, as you do today, within and between the 240, 301, and new 227 area codes.

Maryland Attorney General Brings Action Against Cryptocurrency Platform Coinbase

Per the Office of the Maryland Attorney General: Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown’s Securities Division today announced that it has filed an action against Coinbase Global, Inc. and Coinbase, Inc. (collectively, “Coinbase”), ordering them to cease and desist violating Maryland law in connection with Coinbase’s crypto asset staking offerings. The Securities Division alleges that Coinbase offered and sold unregistered securities in a form that Coinbase calls “staking rewards.”

The Securities Division is alleging that Coinbase is selling securities that do not comply with the Securities Act. Investors who purchase securities may not receive protections when offers fail to comply with Maryland’s requirements, such as full disclosure of the information about the risks associated with the prospective investment and important information about the company, its operations, financial status, and the background and experience of its principals and key personnel.

Maryland Ranked “3rd Best State for Civic Racial Equality“, Per Report

“With black voter turnout down in the 2022 midterms and 64.1% of black Americans registered to vote compared to 70.9% of white Americans”, WalletHub today released its report on the Best States for Racial Equality in Civic Engagement, with Maryland being ranked “3rd Best State for Civic Racial Equality.”

In order to determine which states have the most racial equality in civic engagement, WalletHub compared 48 states and the District of Columbia across five key metrics. Our data set compares the difference between white and black Americans in areas like the share of single-parent households, the volunteer rate and voter turnout. Below, you can see highlights from the report.

Mi Mariachi to Take Over Nava Thai Space in Wheaton

Mi Mariachi Bar & Grill will take over the space that was recently home to Nava Thai and previously home to Sir Walter Raleigh at 11301 Fern St in Wheaton. Nava Thai closed in February after approximately 16 years at the location.

It is unclear at this time if this version of Mi Mariachi is related to the Mi Mariachi that was previously in Wheaton at 2715 University Blvd W. This version of the restaurant incorporated in April 2023 and has an Alcoholic Beverage Services (ABS) hearing for its alcohol and liquor license on Thursday, June 15th at 1pm. Dr. Hagop M. Kantarjian of Rockville’s Ascentage Pharma Receives Award for Lifelong Contributions to Leukemia Research

Rockville’s Ascentage Pharma (6855.HK), a global biopharmaceutical company located at 700 King Farm Blvd in Rockville engaged in developing novel therapies for cancers, chronic hepatitis B (CHB), and age-related diseases, announced that its Clinical Advisory Board member Prof Hagop M. Kantarjian has received the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award for his lifelong contributions to leukemia clinical research and his dedication to improving the lives of patients.

Prof Kantarjian received the award at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, June 2-6, 2023, in Chicago, IL. The David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award is considered the highest honor that ASCO confers and has been presented annually since 1970 to recognize an oncologist who has made outstanding contributions to cancer research, diagnosis, and/or treatment.
