Coming soon signage is up at Baskin Robbins in the Montgomery Village Center. The ice cream shop will be located next to the upcoming Safe Splash Swim School and Suburban Hair. Construction on the interior of the store has just recently begun and no opening date has been announced. Baskin Robbins opened a location earlier this month at 1079 Seven Locks Rd in Potomac Woods Plaza and will hold its official grand opening event on Saturday, June 3, from 11-4pm

Other businesses expected to open in the shopping center this year include Antojitos Salvadoreños Isabel, Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken, and Fiesta Laundromat. In April we let you know that Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, which was scheduled to open in the space next to Kobe Japan, appears to no longer be coming to the shopping center. The space is now listed as available again on the shopping center’s leasing website.

Man Arrested After Openly Carrying Assault Rifle and Knocking on Random Doors in Germantown

Per MCPD: 30-year-old, Trevor Copeland of Silver Spring has been arrested after walking around a Germantown neighborhood, while openly carrying an assault rifle. On Thursday, April 27, 2023, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District- Community Action Team received a report of an individual walking around an apartment complex in the 23000 block of Sweetgum Circle, carrying an assault rifle and knocking on random doors.

When officers arrived at the complex, they quickly made contact with Copeland, who was on the 3rdfloor. Following several minutes of communication, officers quickly apprehended Copeland. When Copeland was taken into custody, he was in possession of a Privately Manufactured Firearm (PMF) short-barreled assault rifle loaded with 300 black ammunition rounds, with one round in the chamber.

Public Hybrid Meeting on the East Silver Spring Neighborhood Greenway Project to be Held on Wednesday, May 31

Per MCDOT: On Wednesday, May 31, starting at 7 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a hybrid meeting to discuss and identify permanent treatments of the East Silver Spring Neighborhood Greenway project. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments.

MCDOT will begin a design project to look at potential neighborhood greenway treatments to slow cars and reduce the amount of traffic on Cedar Street between Wayne Avenue and Bonifant Street, Bonifant Streetbetween Cedar Street and Grove Street, Houston Street between Cedar Street and Thayer Avenue, and Woodbury Drive between Sligo Avenue and Philadelphia Avenue. It will also consider how to make pilot treatments installed in 2021 on Grove Street between Bonifant Street and Sligo Avenue permanent. The project will also look at a bicyclist and pedestrian connection along Sligo Avenue between Grove Street and Woodbury Drive and a safe, high-visibility crossing of Sligo Avenue in that stretch.

Working Draft of Takoma Park Minor Master Plan Amendment to be Presented to MoCo Planning Board June 8th

Planning Board expected to set public hearing date for draft plan re-envisioning areas along Maple Avenue and Flower Avenue, including the Washington Adventist campus area. Per Montgomery Planning:

The Montgomery County Planning Department will present the Working Draft of the Takoma Park Minor Master Plan Amendment to the Montgomery County Planning Board at the June 8 weekly Planning Board meeting. Montgomery Planning staff will request the Board accept the Working Draft Plan as the Public Hearing Draft and set the date for a public hearing to receive community feedback. These are the first steps prior to the Planning Board conducting work sessions to review and revise the draft plan before submission to the County Council and County Executive for public review and final County Council approval.

Planning Board Approves Draft of Pedestrian Master Plan

Paradigm-shifting plan to foster safer, more comfortable, and more accessible pedestrian conditions countywide heads to County Council for review. Per Montgomery Planning:

The Montgomery County Planning Board approved the Montgomery County Planning Department’s draft Pedestrian Master Plan, the county’s first comprehensive master plan to improve the pedestrian experience countywide. The Planning Board voted to approve the plan’s Planning Board Draft and transmit it to the County Council and the County Executive for public review and final County Council approval. There will be an opportunity for more public comment on the plan with the County Council’s public hearing and work session review. Read the Planning Board Draft of the Pedestrian Master Plan.

‘Red, White & Brews’ Takes Place Friday, June 9

Friday, June 9th marks the kickoff of the Town of Poolesville’s ‘Friday on the Commons’ 2023 season with ‘Red, White, and Brews’ taking place at the Commons (19701 Fisher Ave) from 6pm until 10pm.

Per the Town of Poolesville: “We’ll have Landmade, Manor Hill, Rockwell & True Respite breweries in our beer garden serving up their favorite beers. We will also have assorted wines. Food trucks include Biga Biga Pizza, Maria’s Kitchen & Kona Ice. We will have plenty of kids activiites, including a bounce house and yard games. And we’ll have a rockin good time on the Commons listening to the tunes of Michael Heister (under the tent) from 6 – 8 pm and the 19th Street Band on the bandshell from 8 – 10 pm. You don’t want to miss this event!”

‘Bark in the Park’ Takes Place Friday, June 16

‘Bark in the Park’ will take place on Friday, June 16th from 6pm-9pm at 19791 Fisher Ave at Whalen Commons in Poolesville. “Who has the dog that looks most like it’s owner, has the best pooch smooch, is the best dressed, has the happiest tail, has the face only a mother could love, or all around best in show? All of these questions will be answered at our “Cute Dog Contest” and each winner will get an awesome prize!”

Per the Town of Poolesville: “New this year you can “Paint with your Pup” (registration coming soon) and DJ Kevin will have the bandshell rockin. We will have dog related businesses and organizations including Burning Daylight Kennels, Dog Training Solutions, Bark Social, Warrior Canine Connection and Dogs on Deployment. Rescue groups joining us include Forever Changed Rescue & K-9 Lifesavers. And as always we will have food trucks and plenty of kids activities. “

New MD Law Will Prevent Police From Stopping/Searching Cars Due to Marijuana Odor

Starting July 1, law enforcement officers in Maryland can no longer use the odor of marijuana as the only reason to stop and search a vehicle.

Bill HB1071, which was recently passed and will become law on July 1st (Gov. Wes Moore is letting it become law, but will not be signing it) prohibits specified types of cannabis-related evidence to be used as the sole basis to establish reasonable suspicion or probable cause for the possession of contraband or other criminal activity and specifies that certain types of cannabis-related evidence may be factors in the totality of the circumstances leading to investigation, arrest, or a search in relation to a person driving, operating, or controlling a motor vehicle or vessel while impaired by drugs. Evidence discovered or obtained in violation of the bill, including evidence discovered or obtained by consent, is not admissible in a trial, hearing, or other proceeding.

The History of Classic Bakery

We’d like to welcome Classic Bakery, a bakery with a rich MoCo history as the newest member of the MoCo Directory (amazing photos below). The family business was introduced over half a century ago by Grandpa Souren, who discovered his passion for baking in 1947 at the age of 17 in Tehran, Iran. He left his job as a machine mechanic to focus on his small bakery.

Grandpa Souren’s oldest son, Rubic, began helping at the family business when he was just seven years old. Rubic was doing everything from sweeping the floors to mixing large batches by hand– learning the business from the ground up. After immigrating to the United States, Rubic Movsessian and his Grandpa Souren opened Classic Bakery in Gaithersburg in 1991 in its original location in the shopping center that was then home to Hechinger’s and currently home to Bruster’s ice cream.
