Wheaton

Back in July we let you know that Dollar Tree is coming to 2321 University Blvd W in Wheaton, the former site of CVS (next to Max’s, which closed in July). CVS closed this location back in December 2019.  Neighboring businesses let us know that the opening is likely coming very soon and a peek inside shows that construction is nearly complete with the store currently looking like it only needs to be stocked before being ready to open (photos below).

Dollar Tree has undergone several big changes over the past year.  In January 2021, the company raised the price of all items in its stores from $1 to $1.25.  At the time, Dollar Tree said the higher prices were not a result of inflation, but rather to allow the company to offer a wider range of merchandise. In April the chain added “Dollar Tree Plus” sections to area stores, with items priced $3 and $5.  The higher priced items include cookware, headphones, chargers, and t-shirts (Baby Yoda, Lilo & Stich, etc.)  similar to those found at FiveBelow.

Gaithersburg

Pacific Dental Services (PDS) is continuing its expansion across the country with another Montgomery County location, this time in Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg Modern Dentistry will be taking over the former home of Capital One Bank at 812 Muddy Branch Rd in Muddy Branch Square.

PDS previously opened Montgomery County locations in Silver Spring in 2020 (Dentists of Silver Spring at 1286 East-West Hwy), Aspen Hill in 2022 (Aspen Hill Modern Dentistry at 13745 Connecticut Ave in the Aspen Hill Shopping Center)   and opened an Olney location in the Shoppes of Olney a few months back.

Dan Bell, a filmmaker from Baltimore,  is best known for his Dead Mall documentary series, cataloguing the 2010s urban decay phenomenon of foreclosured upon/abandoned shopping malls. After years of fans clamoring for Bell to visit Lakeforest, he released his video highlighting the soon-to-be demolished mall in February (video below). The video has been viewed 63k times since it’s release nine days ago. Plans to redevelop the mall were recently recommended for approval by City of Gaithersburg planning staff.

Restaurants

In December we let you know that Red Ribbon Bakeshop, a Filipino bakery chain, is coming to Wheaton. The bakery will be located at 2501 University Blvd W right next to the Anchor Inn sign that still stands. Currently, Red Ribbon Bakeshop has over 200 locations across the Philippines and 39 in the United States. In 2005 it was acquired by Jollibee Foods Corporation, which opened its first D.C. area Jollibee location at Wheaton Mall in 2021. Red Ribbon Bakeshop announced on its social media in November that it is hiring a General Manager for the location and has since added coming soon signage, but there is still plenty of construction left to go inside (photo below). Though we don’t have an opening date, we suspect the bakery to be at least a couple months away from opening.

More about Red Ribbon: In 1979, Amalia Hizon Mercado, husband Renato Mercado together with their five children, Consuelo Tiutan, Teresita Moran, Renato Mercado, Ricky Mercado and Romy Mercado established Red Ribbon as a small cake shop along Timog Avenue in Quezon City. The cakes developed by daughter Teresita Moran are what gave Red Ribbon its prominence in the dessert market of the Philippines. In 1984, it opened its first overseas outlet in West Covina, California. The company began franchising in 1999. Today, there are more than 200 branches all over the Philippines and 39 in the United States as it continues to expand.

Maryland

“I’m not a career politician, and that has never been my aspiration. I’ve spent nearly my entire career founding and running businesses, and that’s what I’m going to go back to doing. However, I’m going to continue to stay in the fight. Serving as Maryland’s governor and chairing the National Governors Association was the honor of a lifetime, but elected office is not the only way to make a difference.”

“An encouraging trend for Republican politics lies in the fact that the excesses of progressive elites have created the opportunity to attract more working-class voters from all different backgrounds. But many in the Republican Party falsely believe that the best way to reach these voters is through more angry, performative politics and bigger government. These are just empty calories that can’t sustain the lasting governing coalition necessary to restore America.”

Celebrities

https://mocoshow.com/blog/national-cherry-blossom-festival-returns-to-dc-in-april/Lisa Ann Walter, MoCo native and actress who is perhaps best known for her roles as Chessy in the romantic comedy film The Parent Trap and her current role as Melissa Schemmenti on the ABC mockumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary, has been named the honorary Marshal of this year’s Cherry Blossom Parade that will take place on April 15th (per MyMCMedia)

She later graduated with a theater degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, in 1983. The Nation’s Springtime Parade, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is returning to Constitution Avenue on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Grand colorful helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands from across the country, celebrity entertainers, and performers burst down the Parade route in a spectacle of music and showmanship celebrating spring in Washington, DC.
