Police and Family Concerned for Missing 56-Year-Old

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 56-year-old from Rockville.  Neil Bernstein was last heard from on Friday, February 17, 2023, at approximately 9:53 a.m. He is missing from Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville.

Bernstein is approximately 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighs 150 lbs. He has short grey and brown hair and green eyes.  Police and family are concern for his welfare.

Potomac Cookie Co is Coming Soon to Kentlands

Potomac Cookie Co is coming to 109A Market St in the Kentlands Square shopping center in Gaithersburg, near Moby Dick and the upcoming Poke Bros. Potomac Cookie is known for its “giant size” 4oz cookies.  Flavors include Choco-delight, Da Fudge, Dorothy’s Slippers, Double Dutch,  Peebee ‘n’ Yay!, and S’more Love. In other Kentlands news, construction recently began at both Brio’s Chicken and Neal’s Bagels in Gaithersburg. Both restaurants will be  located in the Kentlands paseo, next to Burtons and across from RanKen Noodle House and My Big Finds. Signage for Brio’s Chicken first went up at the location back in 2020 but the restaurant was delayed several years due to issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. No opening date for the Peruvian chicken restaurant has been announced. Brio’s Chicken previously had a location in Aspen Hill in the Aspen Manor shopping center, where Outback is located, but that location is under new ownership and is now known as Gio’s Chicken.

Nike Unite Opens Today in Downtown Silver Spring

Nike Unite officially opens its Downtown Silver location today, Thursday, February 23, at 10am. The store will be open from 10am-8pm Monday through Saturday and 11am-6pm on Sundays.

Back in June we let you know that the Nike Unite store would be coming to Downtown Silver Spring, taking over the location that was formerly home to DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse location at 910 Ellsworth Drive. Nike is also opening a store in Bethesda.

Climate Action Quarterly Progress Report Highlights Countywide Accomplishments to Reduce Climate-Related Risks

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County has released the second-quarter update of its Fiscal Year 2023 Climate Work Plan, highlighting ongoing work on the County’s Climate Action Plan. In the second quarter of FY23, progress was made on more than 50 actions to help reach the goals of the plan. The Climate Action Plan (CAP), unveiled in 2021, is a strategic plan to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent by 2027 and by 100 percent by 2035. The plan seeks to reduce climate-related risks to the County’s residents, businesses and the built and natural environment.

The quarterly progress report summarizes the efforts undertaken by County departments and agencies to implement the CAP through innovative and collaborative projects in clean energy, building, transportation, carbon sequestration, climate adaptation, climate governance, public engagement and zero waste.

New Cybersecurity Initiative with Focus on Helping Small Businesses Seeking to Provide Cybersecurity Services Will Be Detailed at March 6 Event in Rockville

Per Montgomery County: As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of securing critical IT systems and infrastructure, the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) and partners are stepping up their collaborative approach to cybersecurity innovation. A new initiative with a focus on helping small businesses seeking to provide cybersecurity services will be detailed at an event in Rockville on Monday, March 6. The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) is launching the new Cybersecurity Connections initiative with a special emphasis on small businesses seeking to provide cybersecurity services or that want to connect with companies, government or academic organizations for cybersecurity support.

Entries Can Now Be Submitted for Seventh Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival Poster Contest

Per Montgomery County: Entries are now being accepted for the Seventh Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival poster contest. The winning design will be used on all promotional materials for the parade and festival, which will take place in Downtown Wheaton on Sunday, Oct. 15. The winner will receive a $500 commission. The parade and festival will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 15 in and around the Marian Fryer Town Plaza in the Wheaton Triangle Business District. The theme for the 2023 parade is “Art to Action: Before we can make our world a better place, we need a vision of the future that inspires us to act.

Schedule and Education Sessions Announced for 10th Annual Montgomery County Energy Summit That Will Be Held March 28-29 in Silver Spring

On March 28, the sessions are designed for building owners, managers and facilities staff. Attendees will cycle through five stations to learn about energy benchmarking and performance requirements for commercial buildings. The sessions will address resources available to assist in improving building performance, including receiving utility incentives, financing building upgrades, securing building permits and installing electric vehicle charging stations.

During the first day of the summit, attendees will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one, ask questions and receive hands-on support from subject matter experts. Energy audit demos will take place throughout the day to help attendees consider no-and low-cost energy-saving opportunities in their buildings.

Montgomery Parks to Host Meetings on March 15 and 16 to Seek Feedback on Future Bethesda Market Park Development

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery Parks will be hosting two meetings to present initial concepts and solicit feedback on the future Bethesda Market Park development. The first meeting will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, at the Jane E. Lawton Community Recreation Center located at 4301 Willow Lane, Chevy Chase. The meeting will be held in the social hall.

The second meeting will cover the same content. It will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, at Bethesda Elementary School, which is located at 7600 Arlington Road in Bethesda. The meeting will be held in the all-purpose room

Formal Plaque Unveiled to Recognize the Renaming of Rockville Memorial Library

Per Montgomery County: A formal plaque has been dedicated at the Rockville Memorial Library recognizing the name change from the original Rockville Library. The name change for the branch of the Montgomery County Public Libraries system was instituted in 2010 at the request of Gold Star families—those who have lost a family member in U.S. military conflicts—and the County Commission on Veterans Affairs.

The plaque is located on the first-floor lobby of the library, next to a digital display honoring the County’s Fallen Heroes. The Fallen Heroes digital display honors County residents killed in action dating to World War I

Sixth Annual ‘Girl Power Contest’ Recognizing March as Women’s History Month Accepting Entries Through Friday, March 31

Per Montgomery County: In recognition of March as Women’s History Month, the Montgomery County Commission for Women, Montgomery County Libraries and Friends of the Library is holding its Sixth Annual “Girl Power Contest.” County residents, ages 5 and up, are encouraged to submit a short story, poem, drawing or entry in the medium of their choice that addresses this year’s theme. Entries must be submitted by midnight on Friday, March 31.

In 2022, the Montgomery County Council made history as voters in November elected the County’s first female-majority Council. In honor of this milestone, the following question is the theme for this year’s Girl Power Contest: We now have six women on the Montgomery County Council. What advice would you give them to make sure our community is a place where women and girls can feel safe and encouraged?

Vigil to be Held Today for Melanie Diaz -Woman Killed in Silver Spring Apartment Fire
