The Family Room Laytonsville is holding a Holiday Market with over 35 local vendors on Saturday, November 19 from 9am until 2pm at 6820 Olney-Laytonsville Road in Laytonsville.

After setting an opening date of Friday, November 18th last week, La Catrina Bar & Lounge , located at 4935 Cordell Avenue in Bethesda, recently posted on its social media that “for reasons beyond our control, we’ve had to postpone our opening date. We’ll be announcing a new date soon.”

Three MCPS teachers have won Teacher of the Year honors from the Society of Health and Physical EducatorsMaryland (SHAPE MD). The trio—Cecilia Chivers, resource teacher at Paint Branch High School; Amanda Quay, teacher at Damascus High School and Jeffrey Watkins, adapted physical education teacher at Longview School—were recognized during the state convention on Nov. 11–12 in Ocean City. Cecilia Chivers was named SHAPE MD Health Teacher of the Year. In her 14th year teaching health education at Paint Branch, Chivers teaches inclusion health education classes with special education and general education students. “I want my students to see themselves in the curriculum and be able to integrate healthy habits into their lives immediately,” she said. To accomplish this, she brings in a variety of teaching strategies, creates a warm classroom environment and builds strong relationships with students. She leads students through 10 minutes of mindfulness every Monday and brings in guest speakers to reinforce classroom learning.

MCPS will host a series of virtual conversations with the Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) to discuss English as a Second Language classes available for adults. The conversations will be hosted in English, Chinese and Spanish.
The LCMC is offering English as a Second Language classes free to MCPS parents and guardians. There will be virtual and in-person options for all levels of English speakers. Applications are open for the Ruth and Norman Rales–Patricia Baier O’Neill Scholarship Recognizing Academic Excellence. These scholarships for graduating high school seniors were announced earlier this year by the Norman R. Rales and Ruth Rales Foundation to honor the lives and contributions of Ruth and Norman Rales and former Montgomery County Board of Education member Patricia O’Neill. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 76-year-old female from Chevy Chase. On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Majorie Robinson Seideswas last seen in the area of I-495 and I-95. She is driving a silver 2017 Subaru Forrester bearing Maryland license plate 3CX9300.
Seides is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs approximately 135 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Police and family are concerned for her welfare. Per WMATA: Metro celebrated the opening of the Silver Line Extension on Tuesday, connecting customers to six new stations, adding 11.4 miles of track to the Metrorail system, and beginning operations at a modern rail maintenance facility. The Silver Line Extension gives customers a new connection to Washington Dulles International Airport and new service between Reston, Va., and eastern Loudoun County. Today’s grand opening also marks the completion of the Silver Line project, a generational infrastructure investment in Northern Virginia.
Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke was joined by U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other federal, state, and local officials for the grand opening ceremony at Washington Dulles International Airport Station. The event was followed by an inaugural train ride with nearly 100 customers who shared their happiest Metro memories to receive a “Silver Ticket” for the special preview train ride.
The collection of recycled materials for residents whose regular recycling day is Thursday, November 24, 2022, will take place the following Saturday, November 26. Recycling includes newspaper, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, and commingled materials (which should be separated from brush, branches, grass clippings, leaves & other yard trimmings) picked up by the City’s contractor. Recycling scheduled for Friday, November 26, will be picked up as scheduled.
Loose leaf collection will not take place on November 24 & 25. All areas will be collected the preceding Monday through Wednesday.
The Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) voted to award mobile sports wagering licenses to 10 businesses during a meeting held Wednesday, November 16. 10 businesses and full press release below:
SWARC’s awards do not allow the licensees to immediately begin taking wagers. Each business is working with Maryland Lottery and Gaming staff to complete operational requirements before Maryland Lottery and Gaming gives approval to launch. The last step for each applicant is the successful completion of a controlled demonstration of its systems and procedures, which involves live wagering by customers at specific dates and times approved by Maryland Lottery and Gaming. If those go well, the first mobile sports bets could start being placed before Thanksgiving. Additional nformation on the timing of controlled demonstrations will be provided by the licensees.
