Seven MoCo Beers Take Home 1st Place Awards at 2022 Maryland Craft Beer Awards

Over 50 Maryland breweries submitted 300 unique beers to the 2022 Maryland Craft Beer Competition. A panel of judges reviewed, assessed and awarded entries in 20 different style categories, with MoCo beers taking home first place awards in seven categories. The overall competition was won by Olde Mother Brewing Co. from Frederick, with their Callisto Oatmeal Stout receiving top honors. Below you’ll see the MoCo beers that won awards:

Other MoCo beers from places like True Respite (Rockville), Denizens (Silver Spring), Brookeville Beer Farm (Brookeville) also placed in the competition. Full results can be seen here.

Man Who Used Gold Gun and Drove Gold Cadillac Arrested for Armed Robbery of Apple Store in Bethesda

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 32-year-old Tyrone Lamont Jones of Capitol Heights, MD, with the armed robbery of the Apple store in the 4000 block of Bethesda Ave.  On October 22, 2022, at approximately 6 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of an armed robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that Jones arrived at the location in a gold Cadillac and entered the store. After having a brief conversation with an employee about purchasing some electronic merchandise, Jones produced a semiautomatic handgun with a gold slide and an extended magazine and demanded the items. The employee handed over the merchandise to Jones, who then exited the store and left the scene in the gold Cadillac.

School Drive in Gaithersburg Closed Tuesday Morning Due to Collision

UPDATE: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call in the area of Fields Road Elementary School in Gaitherburg at approximately 7:20am on Tuesday morning.  Two pedestrians were struck by a driver on School Drive (near Muddy Branch Rd). Both  patients were transported to the hospital with priority 1 trauma (life-threatening injuries) according to MCFRS Public Information Officer Pete Piringer.

According to Gaithersburg Police, School Drive is closed but voters can still park and vote at Fields Road Elementary School if they enter from Muddy Branch Road side. Drivers are also advised to seek alternate routes.

Maryland Is 2nd Most Charitable State, According to Study

With Americans having donated nearly $485 billion in 2021, up 4% from the previous year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Most Charitable States for 2023. Maryland came in as the 2nd most charitable state in the country, including being ranked 1st in percentage of population who donated money. The report also released its picks for the Best Charities for 2023 and a Charity Calculator to help donors decide where and how to give.

To determine where the most generous Americans are inspiring others to be more selfless, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on 19 key indicators of charitable behavior. The data set ranges from the volunteer rate to the share of income donated to the share of sheltered homeless. Maryland highlights available below:

Matthew McConaughey is Interested in Being Part of a Group That Buys The Washington Commanders

Even though Actor Matthew McConaughey was born and raised in Texas, he has been a Washington fan since he was four years old– rooting for Native Americans in old Westerns he’d watch with his dad. Washington also had a star linebacker, Chris Hanburger, with nearly the same last name as McConaughey’s favorite food, he said in an interview on the team’s website. Now, he’s interested in either putting together or being a part of an investment group that puts a bid on the Washington Commanders.

Mark Maske of the Washington post tweeted that “Matthew McConaughey is exploring the possibilities of joining or forming an investment group to bid on the Washington Commanders, according to a source close to the actor. He’s a co-owner of the Austin FC franchise in Major League Soccer.” This coming a few hours after the New York Post reported that McConaughey was linked to a potential bidding group that includes Jay-Z and Jeff Bezos.

Markoff’s Haunted Forest Celebrates “1 Million People Terrorized”

Markoff’s Haunted Forest, located at 19120 Martinsburg Rd in Dickerson, is one of Maryland’s greatest Halloween events. This past October, Markoff’s celebrated its 30th anniversary. The spooky attraction has closed for the season, but recently shared that it has officially “terrorized” over 1 million people.

This year was the culmination of MHF’s 30 years in the business, which started on September 30th: “2022 is going to be epic. Heart-pounding scares; Terrifying , twists & turns; Eerie glades & creepy trail ghouls; and Fright-full scenes for you to tremble your way through like Mummy’s little kitten.” And epic it was, reaching a milestone that makes MoCo proud.

Maryland State SMOB Applications Are Now Open Until November 15

Applications for the 2023-2024 State Student Member on the Board of Education (SMOB) are now open:

This important public official position requires a nomination by the student’s school, and the student must be regularly enrolled in a public high school, in good standing, and a junior or senior as of July 1, 2023 (meaning they are a current sophomore or junior). The school nomination is due by 5:00 p.m., Monday, November 14, 2022.
