“We have lost a hometown hero who served District 20 residents tirelessly for over four decades in Annapolis, as the longest serving woman in the Maryland General Assembly.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) we’re called to the scene of a construction site at 8787 Georgia Ave near Spring Street (at the future Silver Place) in Silver Spring, according to MCFRS Public Information Officer Pete Piringer.
Two adults were transported to the hospital with priority 1 (life threatening) and priority 2 trauma. At least crane operator was injured from a fall of approximately 30’, according to Piringer. Yerayel Ben Yehuda, 27, of Piccard Drive, was last seen leaving his home on October 23, 2022. He is 5’8, 160lbs, light/med complexion, brown eyes/black hairs in short twists/braids. Police and family are concerned for his welfare. He suffers from a mental condition which may impact his ability to communicate in a responsible manner if approached. Yehuda is also known to frequent the Washington D.C./Northwest area.

As Veterans Day approaches on Friday, Nov. 11, Montgomery County has joined the national “Operation Green Light” salute to veterans and the County’s Commission on Veterans Affairs is seeking additions to its virtual tribute to County veterans.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the County Council are supporting Operation Green Light, a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties to honor those who have made immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom. The program asks for displays of a green light, from Nov. 7-13, in a window of businesses or residences to honor veterans.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision involving an overturned concrete truck on Monday, November 7, around 2:45pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident involved two vehicles and has blocked several lanes of the Inner Loop I495 between Colesville Rd and University Blvd. EMS has transported two patients with non life-threating injuries. We will post an update when more information becomes available.

Per the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office: “Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the honorable Judge David Boynton, defendant, Steven Alston Jr., 18, of Gaithersburg, pleaded guilty to the charge of Attempted First Degree Murder for the shooting of a fellow student at Magruder High School in January 2022. Alston was 17 years old on Friday, January 21, 2022, when he shot the 15-year-old victim inside of the school restroom using a privately manufactured firearm, or ghost gun. He was charged as an adult. Sentencing has been set for Dec. 22, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.”
“I want to express gratitude for the collaboration between Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office immediately following the shooting and for their actions in resolving the situation that day without any further violence. I thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Carlotta Woodward and Donna Fenton for their extraordinary work in the prosecution of this case,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County health officials, in partnership with the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland-College Park (UMD), recently launched wastewater surveillance to detect COVID-19 circulating in the community. Wastewater surveillance provides an accurate way to detect illness-causing viruses and bacteria, such as SARS-CoV-2. Water samples will be collected bi-weekly at five sites in the County and sent to UMD for analysis. Data and results will be posted on the County’s COVID-19 website and the information will be updated weekly.
“Wastewater surveillance will be a game changer for our efforts to better predict outbreaks and prevent them from happening,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “The partnership between our Department of Health and Human Services, the Maryland Department of Health, the University of Maryland and the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is an important tool to help us protect the health of our residents. With winter around the corner, we want to be prepared if there is another surge in COVID-19 cases and this surveillance system helps us do that.”
Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 31-year-old Denzell Jamare King and 19-year-old Raymon Purnell Taylor, both of Hagerstown, for a home invasion they committed on Saturday, September 24, 2022. At approximately 10:06 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the 15400 block of Gallaudet Ave. for the report of a robbery.
Upon arrival, officers determined that the child victim was home alone when two unknown subjects forced entry into the residence. The victim stated that one of the suspects grabbed her, threw her on the bed and demanded that she call her mom and ask for money. When the mom answered, the suspects demanded money. After not finding any money, the suspects stole a firearm and personal documents and left the residence. The victim went to a neighbor’s house to call for help.
At the beginning of the year we let you know of Raising Cane’s planned expansion into the D.C. region, with the first restaurant planned for Sterling, VA at 45545 Dulles Eastern Plaza. We were informed by a representative of the company today that the Sterling location is now scheduled to open in mid-December. Raising Cane’s aims to open 14 stores in the next year, stretching from suburban Baltimore to the Richmond area, with more to on tap for 2023 including Bowie, Dumfries, Manassas and Springfield. No Montgomery County locations have been announced yet.
