The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced $10 million in FY2021 Citizenship and Integration Grant Program awards to 40 public and private non-profit organizations across the country that prepare lawful permanent residents (LPRs) for naturalization. Montgomery College, one of only two recipients in Maryland, was awarded a $250,000 grant.

The data set is grouped into seven categories, such as Student Selectivity, Cost & Financing and Career Outcomes. The metrics range from student-faculty ratio to graduation rate to post-attendance median salary.

Intellian, which selected Rockville for its first U.S.-based Advanced Development Center, committed a $100 million investment to develop advanced satellite communication technologies, including phased array antennas and portable military-grade terminals designed for next-generation low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. Montgomery County’s concentration of satellite companies, engineering talent, and proximity to government and defense stakeholders made the region a strategic fit for their expansion.

Seneca Valley High School principal Marc Cohen sent a letter to the community yesterday (Saturday, October 16th) addressing the fight that ended the Seneca Valley/Northwest football game early and the increase in fights at the school this year.
Per the letter, there will be additional security, counselors, central office staff, and MCPD onsite at Seneca Valley beginning on Monday morning to help assure a safe and orderly learning environment.
The eleventh meeting of the Commission on Redistricting will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public will be able to watch the meeting’s livestream on the Montgomery County Council’s Facebook page and YouTube page here. The meeting will also be televised on County Cable Montgomery (Channels 6 and 996 on Xfinity, Channels 6 and 1056 on RCN and Channel 30 on FiOS).
During the previous Commission on Redistricting meeting on Oct. 13, the Commission discussed three potential redistricting maps. In order for the Commission to continue its work to deliver a final map to the County Council, they will not be holding a public comment session on Oct. 20; instead, they will meet to review the maps and may vote on a final map to send to the Council as part of their eleventh meeting.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police–3rd District Investigative Section are investigating two shootings that occurred in the early morning hours of October 16th and October 17th in the 8300 block of Fenton Street. Detectives believe the two incidents are related.
On Saturday, October 16th, at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers responded to the 8300 block of Fenton Street for the reports of multiple gunshots fired. Officers arrived at the scene and determined that several residences, businesses, and vehicles were struck by numerous rounds of ammunition. During this incident, no one was injured.
Governor Hogan held a “crime announcement” on Friday, October 15th.

The Washington Football Team will be retiring the late Sean Taylor’s jersey at halftime of today’s game. Taylor will be recognized in a press-game ceremony at 12:45 and his jersey will be retired at halftime of today’s game against the Chiefs.
The team was criticized earlier this week for not providing the public notice of the jersey retirement until earlier this week, just a few days before it was scheduled to occur.

In addition, the governor has requested a disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in order to make low-interest loans available.
