Beyond MoCo

Bethesda Bagels announced on Monday that they would be closing its Dupont Circle location in Washington DC this Sunday, April 24, after failing to come to a lease agreement with the landlord of the property.

After nearly 12 years and millions and millions of bagels, our Dupont Circle location will be closing. Our last day will be Sunday, April 24th. Unfortunately, we have not been able to come to an agreement with our landlord to extend our lease. Our family is EXTREMELY THANKFUL for your support over the last decade plus. We will be relocating most of our employees to our other locations.

Michael Kors has closed its Montgomery Mall location permanently, according to a google listing. The store removed all signage a couple weeks back, but remains listed on the Michael Kors website, and Westfield Montgomery directory. The phone number still leads to a Michael Kors recording with temporary hours, but a representative from the Tyson’s location confirmed today that the store has closed.

In July 2020, Reuters reported that American luxury group Capri (Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Versace) estimated a 70% loss of sales due to the corona pandemic. The report stated that Capri may permanently close up to 170 stores, mostly Michael Kors, over the next two years. It seems as though the Montgomery Mall Michael Kors location was one of those casualties.

Silver Spring

Weller’s Dry Cleaning at 8237 Fenton St. in Silver Spring will permanently close on April 23, according to a report by Source of the Spring. Signage on the front door refers customers to Kessler’s Cleaners at 1304 East West Hwy in Silver Spring. Built in 1960, the dry cleaner was opened by Charles Weller, who ran the dry cleaner for over 50 years. The location is known for maintaining its original 1960’s design/architecture.

Bethesda

Robert Wiedmaier’s Mussel Bar & Grille in Bethesda (7262 Woodmont Ave) will be closing permanently on April 9th, according to an employee of the restaurant. It was the first of multiple locations that opened in Bethesda in July of 2010. A second location opened in Atlantic City, N.J, and a third opened in Ballston. The Atlantic City location has since closed and the Ballston location remains open.

Per its website, “inspiration for Mussel Bar is an old-world Belgian roadhouse serving Bière, Moules & Frites, the kind of place where Chef in his youth would head late night to unwind with kitchen colleagues, eat simple food and listen to good music. He’s one of the first to ‘muscle’ the craze and honor his Belgian roots in the DC area with bringing the savory mollusks to the forefront of his own gastro-pubs with the original location in Bethesda, MD that opened in July, 2010.”

Aspen Hill

Jerry’s Subs and Pizza has closed its Aspen Hill location at 13645 Connecticut Ave, an employee of the store confirmed last week.

The location was closed today and all items in the restaurant were sold via auction and picked up today. Our very own Alex T. won auctions for two of the signs and picked them up today.

Potomac

Goldberg’s Bagels will close its Cabin John Village location “in a few weeks, ” according to the store. Established in 1998 and serving the DC Metro area since 2004, Goldberg’s New York Bagels offers award winning bagels and deli style cuisine.

Management told Store Reporter, who was one of the first to report the news, that “the rent has gotten too high and they won’t be back after the Passover holiday.”

Bethesda

Amazon announced earlier this month that it plans to close all 68 of its brick-and-mortar bookstores, pop-ups and shops carrying toys and home goods (including Amazon 4 Star) in the United States and United Kingdom.

Amazon has an Amazon 4 Star location in Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and one that was planned for Germantown, with signage at that location recently going up. The Montgomery Mall Amazon 4 Star location will be closing permanently today, March 19th.  The Germantown location will no longer be opening, despite the recent signage that was erected prior to Amazon’s announcement.

Lakeforest Mall

Rita’s Italian Ice, located on the lower level of Lakeforest Mall (701 Russel Ave) in Gaithersburg, has permanently closed.

The chain, which is known for their Italian ice and frozen custard, has remaining MoCo locations in Burtonsville, Derwood, Germantown, and Silver Spring.  It previously had locations in Gaithersburg (Quince Orchard Rd) and Olney.
