Northwood High School at 919 University Blvd W in Silver Spring has recently been the victim of two incidents of hate and antisemitic vandalism of their athletic field, according to a community letter from Northwood Principal Jonathan Garrick. In the letter, Garrick said, “this has included the posting of organized and professionally created flyers containing horrific hate speech. This matter is currently under investigation by Montgomery County Police and our Community Engagement Officer Russell Larson.”  According to Montgomery County Police, a report was taken on Thursday, February 2, but additional details on the investigation are unavailable at this time.

We are asking assistance from the community to please report any similar flyer postings within the immediate community to Officer Larson at [email protected]. If, when using Northwood facilities, community members see any postings or vandalism to contact me as soon as possible as well ([email protected]). Our entire community stands united that this hatred will never be allowed and those committing it will face severe consequences.


Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Patrol Investigation Unit have arrested and charged 44-year-old Brandi Shoemaker, of Silver Spring, for multiple package thefts in the Silver Spring area.

Between December 2022 and January 2023, detectives were investigating multiple reports of package thefts that occurred in the 2000 block of Longmead Crossing Dr.


Aspen Hill

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police- Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a pedestrian fatality that occurred on Sunday, February 5, 2023, in the area of Georgia Avenue and Hewitt Avenue.

At approximately 7:37 p.m., officers from the 4th District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area for the report of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.The preliminary investigation has determined that the pedestrian was crossing the 13600 block of Georgia Avenue when she was struck by a blue 2002 Ford Taurus traveling northbound.  The driver remained on scene. The female pedestrian, identified as 22-year-old, Ruth Noemi Bermudez-Chavez, was pronounced dead at the scene.  This is an active and ongoing investigation. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this collision. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.


Aspen Hill

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on Sunday night in Aspen Hill. According to MCPD, “At approximately 7:37 p.m., officers responded to the area of Georgia Avenue and Hewitt Avenue for the report of a pedestrian struck.  

The adult pedestrian, who was struck by a car traveling northbound on Georgia Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained on scene. This is an active and ongoing investigation.  The decedent’s name will be released following proper notification of next of kin. A formal news release will be distributed as more information becomes available.”


Wheaton

Montgomery County Police responded to a carjacking that occurred Sunday near Westfield Mall in Wheaton. According to MCPD, “At approximately 3:24 p.m., MCPD responded to the 11000 block of Veirs Mill Road for the report of an armed carjacking. There are no suspects in custody and no reports of injury.”

Potomac

Pahwa is approximately 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has thinning salt and pepper hair. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, dark colored jacket, gray sweatpants and a black hat.  Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Nider Raj Pahwa is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301)279-8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.


Rockville

At approximately 12:44 a.m., Hinnant Jr., walked into the Rockville City Police Station and requested to speak with a homicide detective. Hinnant Jr., stated that officers would find the deceased body of his wife at their residence on Lanier Drive.


Takoma Park

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating, Jennifer Soto Muralles, a missing 16-year-old from Takoma Park.

Muralles was last seen on Thursday, February, 2, 2023, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., in the 8500 block of Greenwood Avenue. Muralles is 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs approximately 120 pounds. She has blue hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo of a flower on her hand and another on the inside of her left forearm. She was last seen wearing a brown t-shirt and sweater, black pants and black boots.


Montgomery Village

At approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the 6th District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.


Germantown

Officers located a 16-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Two possible suspects were seen running from the area of the shooting. There is no one in custody.

This is active and ongoing investigation and police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. More information will be released when it is available.”
