Shake Shack Hopes to Open Three New MoCo Locations by the End of 2022

When the last Arby’s in MoCo closed, rumors started flying about Shake Shack possibly taking over the location. We spoke with management at the Cabin John location and were not able to get confirmation on that specific location, but were told that the restaurant chain hopes to open three new MoCo locations by the end of next year.

Bethesda

Chef Tony’s at 4926 St Elmo Ave in Bethesda will have it’s last day of service this Sunday, May 23rd. This is not an unexpected decision, as the that area is scheduled to be redeveloped into apartment buildings. Neighboring restaurant VUK closed its doors on May 16th. The restaurant plans to reopen in a new location this September.

In a letter on their website, the owners write, “some time ago, we realized this date was nearing, and we needed to see what other opportunities were out there…and we have been looking and looking at neighboring spots, trying to find the best space that would be suitable to move our business in Bethesda…and we’re happy to say we’ve found it!”

Downtown Silver Spring

Popeyes in Downtown Silver Spring Update

We first reported back in October that Popeyes will be taking over the space that was left vacant by Bombay Gaylord in 2015 at 8401 George Ave. in Silver Spring. Bombay closed after a fire destroyed the restaurant and the owners have since opened Nirvana Indian Cuisine in Olney back in late 2018.

Beyond MoCo

Governor Larry Hogan will be signing several bills into law tomorrow that were approved by the Maryland General Assembly, including a two year extension on the sale of alcohol via delivery and carryout by licensed restaurants.

The Montgomery County ABS, which regulates the sale of liquor in Montgomery County, passed a temporary resolution back on March 24, 2020 that allows holders of on-premise licenses to sell for carry out and delivery. This was one ways restaurants were able to stay afloat during the pandemic while dining rooms were shut down. A new bill, SB205, will replace the temporary resolution in July.
