Takoma Park

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, will be closing a portion of Sligo Creek Parkway to vehicles and the trail to pedestrians and bicyclists from Carroll Avenue to Jackson Avenue beginning on Monday, March 7, 2022.

Trail construction will address drainage improvements to mitigate flooding on the trail. Construction is anticipated to take approximately one month to complete. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to access Sligo Creek Parkway during the closure.


Chevy Chase

Three fires that have left two separate families displaced occurred overnight, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer. The fires occurred in Takoma Park, Germantown, and a Chevy Chase. There were no injuries reported in any of the fires.

The first was a 2-alarm fire at 7401 New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park at the Hampshire Tower apartments. One family consisting of two children and two adults was displaced, and there was approximately $25k in damages. No word on the cause of the fire.


Gaithersburg

All three cities in Montgomery County have announced that mask requirements will stay in place in city buildings after Montgomery County’s mask mandate expires tomorrow, February 21 at 11:59pm.

Restaurants

There will be a liquor license hearing on Thursday, March 3rd at 1pm for the premises known as Barriles Restaurant and Sports Bar.

The upcoming restaurant, located at 7637 New Hampshire Ave in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads shopping center in Takoma Park, will be taking over the spot formerly occupied by Mogotillo- a Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant that occupied the space for nearly a decade.


Restaurants

SOKO, a neighborhood butchery, has officially opened at 7306 Carroll Ave in Takoma Park.

Owned and operated by partners Brad Feickert & Chris Brown, SOKO focuses on local & sustainable farms that raise animals ethically and humanly. The neighborhood butchery offers a menu that consists of breakfast and lunch. Breakfast offerings include sandwiches, breakfast burritos, bagels, bacon, and sausage. Lunch offerings include a variety of deli sandwiches with sides of fries or chips. They are open every day from 7:30am-8pm and both menus are available all day.


Takoma Park

A $1 million Powerball ticket was sold in Montgomery County for the drawing held on Monday, December 20th. Per Maryland Lottery, the ticket was sold at New Hampshire Sunoco, 6360 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park and remains unclaimed as of Dec. 27.
