Update on Monday’s Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Bethesda

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision involving a motorcyclist that occurred this morning in Bethesda.

At approximately 11:28 this morning (Monday, April 19), 2nd District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to River Road at Beech Tree Road for the report of a serious collision involving a motorcycle.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2012 Yamaha Zuma motorcycle and a 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer were traveling westbound next to each other on River Road approaching Beech Tree Road. For reasons still under investigation, the Yamaha collided with the side of the Peterbilt. After the initial collision with the Peterbilt, the Yamaha then struck a 2020 Ford Transit van which was stopped on Beech Tree Road and waiting to turn west onto River Road.
The motorcyclist, identified as Babak Roboubi, age 57, of Helmsdale Road in Bethesda, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Peterbilt, identified as Bobbie Evans, III, age 33, of Grindon Avenue in Baltimore, was not injured in the collision.
The driver of the Ford Transit van, identified as Bafoday Tunkara, age 39, of Lyttonsville Road in Silver Spring, was not injured in the collision.
This collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
