Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has responded via social media on the attack that occurred this morning against Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi. “The First Lady and I are praying for Paul Pelosi’s recovery after the vicious assault on his life. There is absolutely no place for violence in our politics. Anyone who calls themselves a leader must show zero tolerance for it.”

This morning, Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, issued this statement: “Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.

NBC4’s Doreen Gentzler Announces Retirement After 33 Years at the Station

Longtime NBC4 newscaster Doreen Gentzler announced that she will be retiring at the end of November during Friday evening’s newscast. Gentzler, who joined NBC4 in 1989, following the departure of Dave Marash, has been with the station for 33 years.

She co-anchors the weekday 6pm and 11pm editions of News4 on WRC-TV (NBC4) and is also the station’s health reporter. Her reports have taken her around the world, including the Persian Gulf, Bosnia and Ecuador. Her health reports can usually be seen on News4 at 5pm, and other station newscasts. She is the on-air spokesperson for the station’s successful NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo, held each January at the Washington Convention Center. She has also made appearances as herself on NBC shows The Event and The Blacklist. Gentzler anchored WRC’s 6pm news alongside veteran anchor Jim Vance for 28 years – a partnership that lasted until Vance’s death in July 2017.

Council Committee to Review Legislation to Prohibit the Possession of Firearms in or Near Places of Public Assembly on Monday, October 31

In the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision of New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn. v. Bruen, Superintendent of new York State Police, the Supreme Court overturned a requirement of New York’s handgun carry law. The New York law had required an applicant for a handgun carry license to show proper cause for the license, and the Supreme Court held that the requirement violated the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms. The Court explained, however, that longstanding laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings are constitutionally permissible.

Like New York, Maryland has a proper-cause requirement for wear-and-carry handgun licenses. Gov. Larry Hogan, in response to Bruen, instructed the Maryland State Police not to enforce the proper-cause element of the Maryland law. As a result of the Supreme Court ruling and Governor Hogan’s order to the Maryland State Police, more individuals in Maryland likely will carry firearms, regardless of whether the individuals have any good or substantial reason to carry them.

40 Years for Co-defendant in Aspen Hill Murder

Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, Judge John Maloney sentenced defendant, Bryan Byrd, 31, of Washington D.C., to life in prison suspend all but 40 years and five years of supervised probation upon release. A jury convicted Byrd and co-defendant, Vaughn Darvel Bellamy, 32, of Hagerstown, MD, last month on charges of first-degree murder for the death of Alexander Buie in 2013, and multiple related charges. Bellamy is scheduled for sentencing on December 13^th.

Bellamy and Byrd face a potential sentence of life in prison. A sentencing hearing for Bellamy is scheduled for Oct. 17, at 2pm. A sentencing hearing for Byrd is scheduled for Oct. 28^th at 2:30pm. A third defendant pleaded guilty to charges of attempted armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and conspiracy to use a firearm in commission of a crime of violence. He is in custody and awaiting sentencing.

Influenza, RSV and other respiratory infections

We are paying close attention to the surge of respiratory illness including influenza (flu) cases in our metropolitan region. This week, the Virginia Department of Healthurged residents to prepare for increased respiratory illnesses after a large flu outbreak in a high school attracted national attention. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is another surging infection, with increased numbers straining the capacity of pediatric hospitals. Both influenza and RSV are viruses that cause mild respiratory symptoms in most people, but can be dangerous for very young children, older adults or those with certain medical conditions.

Detectives Investigate Commercial Burglary in Rockville; Surveillance Photos of Suspect Released

On Monday, October 17, 2022, at approximately 6 a.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report of a commercial burglary that occurred earlier. The investigation by detectives has determined that on October 16, 2022, at approximately 11:03 a.m., a male suspect is observed kicking the front door of the store until the glass breaks, allowing him to enter. Once inside, the suspect approached the Cigarette Cabinet, stole property and then left the scene.

The suspect is described as a White male with a red and gray beard and mustache. He was wearing a white bicycle helmet, blue plaid shirt, blue jeans, black sneakers and a black and red backpack. Detectives reviewed the surveillance footage of the store and obtained photographs of the suspect.

Update on CAVA Digital Kitchen in Germantown

Permanent signage is up for Cava Digital Kitchen at 19865 Century Blvd in Germantown, which is replacing Zoe’s Kitchen. We’re told the restaurant is hoping to open in November, but no date has been announced. CAVA opened their first Digital Kitchen in Sandy Spring, GA back in March. According to a social media posts by CAVA, “CAVA Digital Kitchen has arrived… Just order ahead on our app or our site for easy pickup or delivery! Convenient *and* delicious. Build your bowl: order.cava.com”

Governor Hogan Announces Statewide Preparedness Efforts to Address Increase in RSV and Potential COVID-19 and Flu Surges

ANNAPOLIS, MD—As hospitals in the region and across the country experience an increase in Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) admissions, Governor Larry Hogan today announced a series of new mitigation actions, along with preparedness efforts for potential fall and winter COVID-19 and flu surges in Maryland. “After meeting with our multi-agency public health task force yesterday and reviewing all of the data, I am announcing these steps to give our hospitals more tools to expand bed capacity for pediatric patients,” said Governor Hogan. “We also continue to encourage Marylanders to be COVIDReady, so that we remain one of the most vaccinated and boosted states, and stay ahead of the virus.”

Hospitals Directed to Utilize Additional State Funding to Prioritize Pediatric ICU Staffing. RSV hospitalizations are increasing earlier and more rapidly than in previous years, with the 0-2 age group comprising 57% of hospitalizations. On October 14, the Maryland Department of Health announced $80 million in additional funding for healthcare providers across the state. Hospitals will receive $25 million and have been directed in award letters issued today to utilize these resources to increase the hiring and recruitment of staff. For facilities with pediatric ICU and/or inpatient beds, awards should prioritize staffing those units appropriately before considering other non-pediatric units. All hospitals are also strongly urged to collaborate with neighboring hospitals on pediatric patient care coordination.
