Poolesville

One family (5 adults, 1 child) are displaced after a fire at a 2-story home on the 16000 block of Edward’s Ferry Rd in Poolesville that occurred early Wednesday afternoon.  Around 70 MCFRS firefighters responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but is believed to have started in the kitchen where there were multiple competent ignition sources, including an air fryer, stove top, and electrical wiring.

At the celebration, County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Gabe Albornoz issued a joint proclamation recognizing the commission’s accomplishments in advancing and protecting women’s rights since its establishment in 1972.

In addition to County Executive Elrich and Council President Albornoz, among those at the celebration were CFW Chair Donna Rojas, County Councilmember Nancy Navarro, founding commissioner and former Congresswoman Connie Morella, CFW Executive Director Jodi Finkelstein and Sandy Spring Museum Board of Directors President Naomi Yadin-Mendick.


Clarksburg

Montgomery County’s commitment to combatting climate change includes trying to inspire residents and businesses to purchase electric vehicles. To make that plan viable, accessibility to EV charging stations is a necessity. The commitment to that aspect of the County’s Climate Action Plan continued on July 23 as six new EV charging stations were dedicated at the Clarksburg Condominium II.

Clarksburg Condominium II is located at 12824 Clarksburg Square Road in Clarksburg. The condominium association website states that residents who register in advance will receive reduced rates for charging their vehicles at the new charging stations.


MoCo Government

Ballot-counting sessions, referred to as the “canvasses,” have been conducted daily by the Board of Elections since July 21. Those votes are added to the totals of early voting (July 7-14) and Election Day.

The count of provisional ballots started on Thursday, July 28.


Arts

Created in conjunction with Strathmore and Woolly Mammoth’s co-presentation of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon, the fellowship engaged eight high school fellows in six months of study, discussions, and creation at the intersection of arts and social change.

Their research and reflection covered Butler’s Parable novels, as well as many other works and creators including Audre Lorde, Sonic Youth, Terence Trent D’Arby, Danez Smith, Robin DiAngelo, Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, the film “Sorry to Bother You,” the TV show “American Gods,” and more.


Beyond MoCo

Fox Theatres announced on Tuesday that Sun & Surf Cinema, 14301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, Maryland, will soon close after fifty years of business. The final day of operations will be Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2022. Fox Theatres will continue to operate the Fox Gold Coast Theater located next to the Gold Coast Mall at 11301 Coastal Highway, also in Ocean City, Maryland. Gift cards and passes from Sun & Surf will be honored at Fox Gold Coast.

Sun & Surf was built in 1972 as a twin theater (with two screens) by Muriel and Reba Schwartz of Dover, Delaware. Two additional screens were added in 1974. Fox Theatres acquired the theater in 1980 and added four more screens in 1982, expanding the theater to the 8-plex it is today. In 2015, the theater was extensively renovated and luxury recliners were installed. The Sun & Surf property was recently acquired by a local hotel developer.


Maryland

There are no reports of the suspect driver trying to pull over any motorists. Troopers have located the suspect vehicle and have spoken to a person of interest in this case, but no charges have been filed at this time. Investigators are asking the public if they encountered this vehicle to please contact the Rockville Barrack at 301-424-2101. The case remains under investigation.


Glenmont

This article originally stated that a shooting occurred at the Wheaton/Glenmont Outdoor Pool. According to Park Police, the shooting occurred at nearby Glenmont Local Park, near Wheaton/Glenmont Outdoor Pool, where the victim requested assistance from staff at the pool.

The Maryland-National Capital Park Police are currently investigating a shooting at that occurred near Wheaton/Glenmont Outdoor Pool (12621 Dalewood Drive) in Wheaton. According to Park Police, at approximately 3pm, officers located an adult male suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. MCP 4th District Officers applied a tourniquet prior to EMS arrival. The victim was transported to an area hospital and Sgt. Hector Ayala Wheaton/Glenmont Outdoor Pool is closed for the rest of the day.


Gaithersburg

The City of Gaithersburg has announced that Melodia Rinaldi will be joining the Gaithersburg Chorus as its new Music Director as of August 23, 2022.

Melodia Mae “Mimi” Rinaldi (she/her) is a music educator from Baltimore. She is currently the director of the Vocal Programs at Gaithersburg Middle School in MCPS where she also teaches General Music, Drama/Theater, and is a faculty advisor of the SOS program and the Restorative Justice initiative.


MoCo Government

“I am pleased to announce the reopening of the rental relief program. We have additional funds to distribute, and we know that the need for this assistance has not gone away,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “The impact of this pandemic will be with us for quite some time, so I urge eligible residents who are in need to not delay and apply today.”

The rent relief program launched in May 2020 and as of July 24, has distributed $79.1 million in financial assistance.  Funding for the fourth phase was provided by U.S. Treasury Emergency Rental Assistance funds in direct allocations to the County and as a sub-grantee to the State of Maryland.
