On the same date, officers from the 2nd District responded to the 8000 block of Glenbrook Road for the report of a burglary that occurred earlier. Detectives obtained surveillance footage, which showed the suspect kicking in the back storm door to gain entry to the residence at approximately 5 a.m. The video footage later showed the suspect leaving the residence at approximately 11 a.m. Nothing was taken from the residence.

The suspect is described as a white male with a mustache, long black hair and medium build. The suspect was wearing a black jacket, black pants and grey sneakers.

Dogfish Head Alehouse Announce It’s Donated $1,000,000 to Charity Over the Past 17 Years

Dogfish Head Alehouse, which opened its first location at 800 W. Diamond Ave in Gaithersburg in 2005, announced it has donated a combined $1,000,000 to charity over the past 17 years between its three locations.

Dogfish Head Alehouses, which are owned and operated independent from the Dogfish Head brewery in Milton, DE through a licensing agreement, announced recently that it will be closing its Falls Church, VA location at 6220 Leesburg Pike in the Seven Corners Shopping Center. The restaurant says it was unable to come to terms with the property owner when it came time to renew its lease. The last day of service will be on May 15. The Dogfish Alehouse locations at 800 W. Diamond Ave in Gaithersburg and 13041 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy in Fairfax, VA will remain open.

Hours today, Thursday, April 28th, run until 6pm. Friday, April 29th goes from 9am until 7pm and Saturday, April 30th goes from 9am until 3pm.

Lyft Driver Carjacked at Gun Point Wednesday Night

A Lyft driver was carjacked at gunpoint Wednesday night in the 8000 block of 13th St in downtown Silver Spring. According to Montgomery County Police, officers were called to the scene at approximately 10:11pm. The driver reportedly picked up three passengers, one of which pulled out a handgun and demanded the driver leave the vehicle. The three individuals then took off with the vehicle.

The incident is under investigation and Montgomery County Police are expected to release addition details soon. There are no suspects in custody at this time.

Washington D.C. Temple Now Open to the Public for the First Time Since 1974

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding public tours at the famous Washington D.C. Temple, the first time it has open to the public since 1974. The church was originally scheduled to open to the public in 2019 but was delayed due to COVID-19. The temple, beyond the visitor center, will be open to the public from April 28 through June 4, 2022, 9am-9pm, except on Sundays. The temple is located at 9900 Stoneybrook Dr. in Kensington. Parking and Metro shuttle tickets are now available at www.dctemple.org/open-house/

“When the temple was completed in 1974, it served all Latter-day Saints living east of the Mississippi and some Latter-day Saints in South America and Canada. At 160,000 square feet, it is the third largest temple in the world. It contains instruction rooms and sealing rooms, where marriages are performed.”

Election Workers Need for 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election

To serve in this paid volunteer position, all election poll workers must be registered to vote in the State of Maryland; able to speak, read and write the English language; and cannot hold, or be a candidate for, public or party office. In addition, election workers may not serve as a campaign manager for a candidate or as treasurer for any campaign finance entity.

Training is required and will be provided to all election workers. This includes an online quiz, virtual training and classroom in-person training. Volunteers will be paid for completing training and working the election. Several positions are offered, including all-day and part-day. More information is available at www.777vote.org.

Montgomery County to Celebrate Arbor Day by Commemorating the New County Tree on Friday, April 29, in Silver Spring

At the event, there will be tree planting, trees will be raffled off and volunteers will take part in a trash pickup. It is hoped the activities will bring attention to the new County tree and encourage the planting of trees so the tree canopy increases. Residents also can register for “plogging” supplies at the event. Plogging is an innovate way to help the environment by doing an exercise like jogging, walking or biking while picking up trash.

“The black tupelo is now added to the list of county symbols that includes the robin as the County bird, the dogwood as the County blossom and the County seal,” said County Department of Environmental Protection Acting Director Adriana Hochberg. “The black tupelo is resilient, beautiful and critical to the County’s ecosystem and tree canopy. It’s a perfect symbol for Montgomery County as our official tree”.

Astronaut Jessica Watkins, the First Black Woman to Serve Aboard the International Space Station, is From Gaithersburg

Jessica Watkins became the first Black woman astronaut to be a part of a crew aboard the International Space Station when SpaceX’s Crew-4 mission launched on Wednesday morning. Watkins and her three other crew members will be on the station for around six months. Born in Gaithersburg in 1988, her family later moved to Layfette, Colorado where she graduated high school. She then went on to play rugby at Stanford University in California, where she received her bachelor’s degree in geological and environmental sciences. She later earned a Ph.D. in geology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“I think it’s important to recognize this as a milestone for our agency and for our country, as well, to know that we are building on the foundation that was laid by the Black woman astronauts who’ve come before me,” Watkins told NPR

130th Annual Laytonsville Community Parade to Take Place on May 14

The 2022 Laytonsville Community Parade is returning to Laytonsville on Saturday, May 14 “Better Together for 130 Years” after a couple years off due to Covid-related concerns. “Everyone is invited to join the Town of Laytonsville in celebrating the 130th anniversary and the return of the parade on Saturday, May 14, 2022.” The road will close at 11am and the parade will begin at 11:30am.

Participants or parade units can be a float, wagon, decorated vehicle, walking group, etc. On parade day vehicles will lineup on 1st and 2nd Streets. Walking units will assemble in the area behind Saint Bartholomew Church. All parade participants should arrive no later than 10:30 AM for lineup. Signage is Up at South Block (Smoothie and Juice Bar) in Pike & Rose

Back in September we let you know that South Block, a smoothie and juice bar best known for their acai bowls, would be opening a new location in Pike & Rose. South Block has been aiming for a summer 2022 opening, and they seem to be on pace as signage has now gone up at the space that’s as formerly occupied by the Residences At Pike & Rose leasing office, right next to the recently opened Call Your Mother Deli (The leasing office has moved to the spot formerly occupied by Nava Health.)

Along with their acai bowls, South Block offers other fruit and vegetable-based bowls, a range of smoothies, and cold pressed juices. They currently have eleven locations throughout DC and Virginia– their Pike & Rose spot will be their first location in Maryland. In addition to their brick and mortar locations, South Block has an online storefront where they sell pre-blended smoothie bowl kits that they deliver throughout the continental United States.
