Governor Hogan Announces Additional $10 Million For Neighborhood Safety Grants as Part of “Refund the Police” Initiative

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Larry Hogan today announced nearly $10 million in grant awards through the Community Safety Works program to more than 150 business districts, neighborhood associations, local governments and nonprofit organizations across Maryland, expanding on the governor’s Re-Fund The Police Initiative.

Administered by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), this program improves the livability and economic potential of Maryland communities through targeted investments in crime prevention that impact community safety. With the second round of awards, Community Safety Works has assisted more than 450 organizations.

Newman is approximately 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved sweater, a yellow ski mask, black pants and a black hoodie. Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Porky The Litter Eater

If you’ve been to Cabin John Regional Park in the last half century or so you’ve probably seen a bizarre, miniature house-like structure that has a pig face with its mouth wide open on one side. That’s Porky. You can feed him paper and cardboard and soft drink cans, but you can’t feed him bottles or broken glass…glass gives him a tummy ache.

Porky has been there since 1966, making his debut one year after Billy the Litter Eater over at Wheaton Regional Park. “I still have nightmares of my arm getting sucked into this thing” commented Richard Schaffer as he shared a picture of the famous trash dispenser. Creepy Basement, a popular website that is comprised of creepy highlights from across the world, refers to Porky as an “eternally hungry demon pig that commands children to feed him with his creepy 1950s radio voice.”

Nike Unite Sets Opening Date in Downtown Silver Spring

Update: Nike Unite has pushed the opening date back to Thursday, February 16th.

Back in June we let you know that a Nike Unite store is coming to Downtown Silver Spring, taking over the location that was formerly home to DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse location at 910 Ellsworth Drive. After previously setting an opening date of November 3rd on its Google listing, the store pushed back the opening to “2023” and has now set an opening date of Thursday, February 2nd according to its Google listing.

Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash In Prince George’s County

The victim, a male who has yet to be positively identified, was transported by ambulance to University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center, where he was declared deceased. The driver of the Hyundai, a female, and a child who was a passenger in the vehicle, were transported by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. According to investigators, impaired driving was not a factor in this crash. The road was closed until about 8:50 p.m. following the crash. The Maryland State Police Crash Team will conduct the investigation into this incident. The case remains under investigation

Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Arrest Man Following Barricade Situation In St. Mary’s County

Buckler was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he is awaiting an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Following consultation with the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, Buckler was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and failure to comply with the provisions of a final extreme protective order. Troopers from the Criminal Enforcement Division – Southern Region will be conducting the investigation into this case.

The case remains under investigation

17th Annual Montgomery History Conference to be Held Online in January

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery History will hold its 17th Annual Montgomery County History Conference as an online event Jan. 21, 25 and 28. The conference will offer a myriad of opportunities to participate, including three keynote sessions, 12 breakout sessions and a film screening.

Breakout sessions will cover topics such as restrictive covenants and housing discrimination, Frieda’s Cottage, LGBTQ+ history, the archaeology of the enslaved, suburban growth in the 1980s and the changing face of agriculture. There also will be a session on the Oyster Wars on the Chesapeake Bay.

USPIS Offers Reward of Up to $50K For Information Leading to Arrest and Conviction of Suspect(s) Who Robbed USPS Letter Carrier on December 28

Per USPIS: The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect who robbed a United States Postal Service letter carrier at 1215 East West Highway, Silver Spring, MD 20910. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on December 28, 2022.

The suspect is desribed as a Black male in his late 20s, aproximately 5’10” tall and of average build. The suspect was wearing a black shirt, black pants, and black and white Puma shoes. The suspect was carrying an orange jacket. The suspect fled in a red vehicle, possibly a Jeep Cherokee or Jeep Compass. TAKE NO ACTION TO APPREHEND THESE PERSONS YOURSELF. Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 14-year-old from Silver Spring. Catherine Madrid Flores was last seen on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., in the 100 block of Colony Road.

Catherine is approximately 5-feet, 3-inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. She has long black hair with red highlights and brown eyes. Catherine was last seen wearing a gray long sleeve shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.
