Today the Montgomery County Council introduced, held a public hearing, and voted on a Second Amended Board of Health Regulation to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 and Extend Indoor Masking Guidance in Montgomery County.

The Council voted unanimously for the new public health order, which will keep the indoor mask mandate in place until February 21.


Maryland

Earlier today Governor Larry Hogan tweeted that nearly $9 million in tax credits would be awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. “Since its launch in 2017, over 40,600 residents have benefited from @MDMHEC’s Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit Program. Today we are awarding an additional nearly $9 million in tax credits to over 9,000 Marylanders with student loan debt.”

MoCoSnow

We remain in the “slight winter storm” threat category for potential winter weather this Friday into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

As we mentioned in yesterday’s update, this thing can go either way…and it already has. The GFS showed a major storm, took it away, brought it back, took it away (late yesterday), and has kind of brought it back again this morning with the model output showing a general 2-4″ for our area. The Euro didn’t show much, then started bringing the storm our way, took it away, and brought it back overnight for a model output of a general 4-6″ for our area.


Gaithersburg

KIMCO Realty submitted Zoning Map Amendment application Z-8911-2021 and associated Concept Plan application SP-8910-2021, proposing to rezone 18501 North Frederick Avenue from C-2 (General Commercial) to CD (Corridor Development) and develop two multi-family residential buildings with ground floor commercial uses.

The shopping center is known as “Gaithersburg S.C.” and is home to MoCo’s only Bruster’s Ice Cream and Floor & Decor in the space that was once occupied by Hechinger. A new restaurant, Corner Pizza & Subs, signed on earlier this year to take over the space that was home to the first Classic Bakery location.


Education

Jesus Guadalupe-Santaclaya is currently being held without bond after being arrested for bringing an AR-style rifle on to Gaithersburg High School property back on January 14.

The rifle was a privately made firearm (ghost gun.)


Beyond MoCo

On Monday, January 24, 2022, three Baltimore City Firefighters were tragically killed while fighting a row house fire. Lieutenant Paul Butrim, Firefighter/Paramedic Kelsey Sadler & Firefighter/Paramedic Kenneth Lacayo were engaged in an interior attack of the fire when a significant portion of the home suddenly collapsed. Baltimore Firefighter John McMaster is currently hospitalized with critical injuries.Firefighter/Paramedic Kenneth Lacayo was a Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad Life Member and graduated from Wheaton High School. In addition to his service with the Baltimore City Fire Department, Kenny had volunteered in Wheaton for almost 11 years.
