Newport Mill Middle School Placed on Lockdown Friday Afternoon Following Nearby Sounds of Gunshots; No Active Threat

Update: The lockdown has been lifted, and Newport Mill is proceeding with its regular dismissal schedule.
Newport Middle School at 11311 Newport Mill Rd in Silver Spring has been placed on lockdown due to an incident near the school. Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 12:56pm on Friday, September 22: Newport Mill Middle School School security has placed the school on lockdown following sounds of shots fired in the area. This does not involve the school. MCPD units are in the area. There is no active threat to students. More information will be released when available.”
