12/9/21 Update: Metro has unanimously approved changing the White Flint Metro Station name to “North Bethesda.”

Metro’s board of directors will vote Thursday, December 9, on a proposal to rename the White Flint Metro station “North Bethesda,” per Friends of White Flint.

ROCKVILLE, Md., Dec. 8, 2020—Today Councilmember Nancy Navarro was elected unanimously as the new president of the Corporate Board for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG), an organization that connects leaders in local jurisdictions across the Washington metropolitan area.


Germantown

Yesterday we received word that Naz’s Halal would expanding to Germantown and Rockville, but we have  now learned of two additional MoCo locations– Takoma Park and White Oak.

Gaithersburg

The Gaithersburg City Council approved unanimously approved Novavax’s development plan at Monday’s meeting.

Per Shulman Rogers, Novavax secured two sites in the City of Gaithersburg and obtained zoning approvals for a 180,000 square feet Global Headquarters and manufacturing facility delivering late summer at 700 Quince Orchard, and an additional 600,000+ square feet integrated campus next door at 14 Firstfield Road for expansion of its manufacturing and research and development capacity.


Germantown

Naz’s Halal Food will open two new MoCo locations in 2022. The new restaurants will be located in Germantown and Rockville, a representative from the restaurant confirmed today.

As of now, we don’t have exact locations, but we’re told Edmonston Crossing (the shopping center that is home to Iron Age) is likely in Rockville. Permits have recently been submitted and more information will be provided as it becomes available.


Education

During his MCPS tenure, Dr. Starr was recognized for his willingness to advocate for teachers and school staff. He was a strong believer in the potential of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to create meaningful change in public education, and urged state and national leaders to consider a moratorium on accountability systems and evaluations based on out-of-date standardized tests so schools and districts can effectively align their systems, policies, and professional development to the CCSS.

He resigned from the position on February 16, 2015, in what officials said was a mutually agreed upon decision.


MoCo Celebs

Ben Stein grew up in the Woodside Forest neighborhood of Silver Spring. He attended Montgomery Hills Junior High with Sylvester Stallone in the late 50s. Stein then moved on to Blair High School, where he was a year ahead of Goldie Hawn and graduated with journalist, Carl Bernstein (teamed with Bob Woodward to do much of the original reporting on the Watergate Scandal, which led to the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon).

He majored in economics at Columbia University’s Columbia College and graduated with honors before graduating as valedictorian from Yale Law School.


MoCoSnow

The threat we’ve been watching has almost completely backed off, with very little to no snow expected to fall Wednesday morning.

Per the National Weather Service, less than an inch is expected to fall, with the “high end” amount under an inch as well (10% chance of the high end amount falling).


MCFRS

Update 1:05am, December 7: A man has died after being found unconscious in a house fire on Monday night.

Approximately 65 firefighters were on the scene of a house fire on the 6900 block of Anchorage Drive off of MacArthur Blvd in Bethesda/Cabin John at approximately 7:30pm earlier this evening.
