Olney’s Fair Hill Shops shopping center began its summer concert series on May 9th and will continue through September 26th. The concerts take place on the second and fourth Thursday of the month and each day consists of an early concert for kids with a family concert in the evenings. The full schedule can be seen below:

Education

Megan Lee of Watkins Mill High School and Kairo Maysonet Walker of Julius West Middle School were the top winners in their respective categories in this year’s “Keeping it Safe Coalition” student video contest sponsored by Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) and the Montgomery County Police Department. The annual contest encourages student teams to create 30-second public service announcements about the risks of under-21 alcohol use.

Aspen Hill

It has been nearly 10 years since Walmart officially abandoned its plans to open a store in Aspen Hill. The retail giant was intending to build a 118,000-square-foot store with expanded grocery offerings on the site of the vacant BAE/Vitro office building at 4115 Aspen Hill Road, touting the creation of nearly 300 jobs.  The nearly 10-acre Aspen Hill property included a 262,000-square-foot office building that was vacant since 2010. In 2019 it was purchased by Kaiser for a future Medical Center that was originally planned to open in 2022. The pandemic halted those plans, and we are still awaiting the next move by Kaiser.

Crime

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Investigative Section are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, in the 900 block of Loxford Terrace in Wheaton. Detectives have released video and photos of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him. The video is available below. (more…)

Gaithersburg

Updated with information that reflects the address of the current pop-up space and information regarding the most recent tenant.

Stretch Lab is coming to 113 Market St in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. The current pop-up space at 371 Main St. will be moving in to the location that was previously home to Occasions Unique Gifts and most recently home to the Artist in Market pop-up. An opening date for the permanent location is not yet available.


MoCo Government

In his weekly update to the community, County Executive Marc Elrich honored retiring Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) Director Anita Vassallo. She joined Chief Administrative Officer Rich Madaleno on the weekly media briefing Wednesday, which you can watch here.
