MCFRS

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a collision involving one vehicle on Josiah Henson Pkwy between Montrose Rd. And Executive Blvd at approximately 5:30pm on Saturday evening.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the crash caused the driver of the vehicle to be trapped inside after striking a utility pole. Crews were able to extricate the driver who was transported to the hospital with priority 2 trauma (serious, but not life-threatening injuries). Some lanes remained blocked as of 7:15pm.


Education

In an email to staff on Friday, MCPS superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight shared additional changes in personnel for the school system. Dr. McKnight previously emailed administrative and supervisory staff on Wednesday to inform them of changes that included announcing that deputy superintendent Dr. Patrick Murphy was no longer employed by the district and that two members of the MCPS Office of School Support and Well-Being (OSSWB), Dr. Donna Redmond Jones and Dr. Eugenia (Jeanie) Dawson are currently on leave. The additional changes shared can be seen below:

    •    Effective Monday, October 16, 2023, Dr. Betty J. Collins will serve as acting deputy superintendent. Dr. Collins, an MCPS graduate, enjoyed a distinguished 49-year career in the district as a teacher, principal, and director of Instructional Leadership, before her retirement in 2018.


Rockville

Rockville voters will decide between two candidates for mayor and 12 candidates for six council seats in this fall’s vote-by-mail city election. The six council candidates with the most votes will win the six council seats. The Mayor and Council serve four-year terms. Every U.S. citizen living within Rockville city limits and over the age of 18 by Nov. 7, 2023 is eligible to vote in the city election. Kensington

A driving lesson didn’t go as planned in Kensington on Saturday afternoon, as we are told a teen drove off the side of a parking garage during a driving lesson with an adult. The incident occurred on the 10600 block of Nash Place, off of Plyers Mill Rd, in Kensington shortly after 3pm. Luckily for both vehicle occupants, there were no injuries sustained.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, a single vehicle rolled over/off barrier of the parking garage (about a 10′ drop) which is located behind a house on Nash Pl.” The vehicle ended up getting wedged between the backyard of the home and a wall. Both occupants were assisted in getting out of the vehicle and evaluated by EMS. No injuries were sustained.


Downtown Silver Spring

Dunkin’ will be moving in will be moving in to 8455 Fenton St, taking over an empty retail space on the ground level of the Central Silver Spring apartment complex. An opening timeframe is not yet available for the store, but construction has not yet started.

Yesterday we let you know that Dunkin’ will also be taking over the space that was previously home to $2.49 Cleaners, at 12196 Georgia Ave. in Wheaton-Glenmont, on the same block as Trippy’s Tacos and Seafood in the Buff and near Popeyes. Dunkin’ has been making a big push lately in Montgomery County, with new locations at the Layhill Center (14328 Layhill Rd) in Silver Spring and in the Goshen Crossing Shopping Center in Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village, where it has taken over the former Capital One Bank building at 20000 Goshen Rd.  Last December, we let you know that Dunkin’ is continuing its massive expansion across the country and within MoCo, and there are currently an additional four locations in the works with more likely to come.


Restaurants

Milk & Honey, a southern inspired brunch and soul food restaurant which has locations across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, has opened in the space that was recently home to Willie T’s Seafood Shack at 9326 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. The news of its opening was first reported by Source of the Spring.

Both Milk & Honey and Willie T’s concepts are owned by Thompson Hospitality, the group behind Matchbox (Bethesda, Rockville, and Silver Spring locations in MoCo), Austin Grill and American Tap Room (both previously in MoCo), and Wiseguy Pizza (now open at Wheaton Mall.) Menu items at Milk & Honey include “Chef Sammy’s Award Winning” Shrimp & Grits, Deep Fried Salmon Hash, Chicken & Waffles, and Crab Benedict. According to the restaurant’s website, this Milk & Honey location will be a a uick service restaurant with limited seating available. Food will be served in carry-out containers. Restaurant hours:


MCFRS

7:19am Update: All lanes are open at this time

Montgomery County Police has issued the following traffic advisory on Saturday morning (6:53am): “Utility work has westbound Old Georgetown Road closed from Tuckerman Lane to I-495. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.”


MoCo Government

Although war in Israel may be thousands of miles away, we must not believe we are immune to the effects here in Montgomery County. We have County residents who have lost family and friends over the past week following this terror attack and ongoing war. Our hearts and sympathies are with them. Residents who are struggling with the loss and trauma are encouraged to seek support by calling the County Crisis Center at 240-777-4000.


Crime

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is investigating a shooting in the area of New Hampshire Avenue and Milestone Drive in White Oak.

According to a social media post by police at 10:14pm, “no injuries have been reported. One vehicle was struck by a bullet. The scene is secured.” We will provide an update if additional information is made available.
