In April, Biz Journals reported that Unibal-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) had defaulted on a roughly $235 million securitized loan tied to Westfield Wheaton, the largest mall in suburban Maryland (DC Region) and the fourth largest in the Greater Washington area. The mall was originally built in 1958 and was known as Wheaton Plaza, the first shopping mall in Montgomery County. (more…)

Crime

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced criminal complaints against Maryland men for assaulting and resisting federal officers in separate incidents in Maryland in June 2025. Both were taken into custody after physical altercations with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

Events

Field of Screams Maryland, one of the region’s most established haunted attractions, has announced it will not operate in 2025 as it undergoes a full renovation, with a reopening planned for September 2026. The hiatus will allow for updates to its trail, haunted house, and other features, while continuing its role as a fundraiser for the Olney Boys & Girls Club.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General announced the recovery of about $520 million in suspected fraudulent unemployment insurance payments made during the COVID-19 pandemic, which were returned to the state of Maryland after being frozen by a financial institution.

Crime

U.S. District Court Judge Deborah L. Boardman sentenced Mikiyas Kefyalew, 27, of Silver Spring, Maryland, to eight years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing fentanyl that resulted in the death of a Bethesda, Maryland, minor in January 2022.
