MoCo Business Returns to Shark Tank for Update on Friday, May 5

Bethesda-based clothing line Collars & Co. was featured on the November 11 episode of Shark Tank on ABC.  Many may have seen the clothing company’s signature item, the “Dress Collar Polo”, a buttery soft polo with a standard English spread collar that is said to be more comfortable than a normal collared shirt. Collar & Co went on Shark Tank seeking $300K for 4% equity at a $7.5 Million valuation from the sharks and ended up striking a deal. The business will return on the May 5th edition of Shark Tank for a business update. More below on how their initial Shark Tank appearance went:

According to its website, Collars & Co.’s mission is to “provide men and women with extremely high quality clothing that not only looks great, but feels amazing as well.” The business sells shirts, sweaters, underwear, and accessories. Bethesda resident Justin Baer presented his product, asking for $300K for a 4% equity (valuation of $7.5M). The business launched in 2021 and went viral on TikTok, leading to 500 orders off the bat and $40K in revenue the first month after the video’s release.

DMV Iron Gym is Coming to Rockville’s Federal Plaza

DMV Iron Gym, a world class facility that offers hand selected, state of the art gym equipment from the 1960’s up to the latest technology from the best manufacturers in the world, is coming to MoCo. The 16,000 square foot facility will open in Rockville’s Federal Plaza in September 2023. It will be located next to Micro Center.

Its mission is to provide members with the most effective equipment, to see the fastest results, allowing them to become the best version of themselves. “For years, we’ve been hearing from our members that they would love to see us expand into Maryland. We were excited by the central location of Federal Plaza in Rockville and look forward to bringing a state-of-the-art gym and training facility to Montgomery County,” says Leo Williams, Owner of DMV Iron Gym.

Edison Cosmetology Students Will Open Salon on Thursday, May 4 For One-Day Fundraiser

Students enrolled in all MCPS comprehensive high schools may apply for enrollment in one of Thomas Edison’s eighteen highly acclaimed career and technology education programs. 2023’s Best & Worst States for Working Moms; Maryland Comes in at 16, Per WalletHub Study

With Mother’s Day around the corner and 73% of women with children under age 18 having been in the labor force during 2022, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s Best & Worst States for Working Moms, with Maryland coming in tied for 16th.

In order to help ease the burden on mothers in the workforce, WalletHub compared the attractiveness of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia for a working mother based on 17 key metrics. The data set ranges from the median women’s salary to the female unemployment rate to day-care quality.

Coming Soon Signage Up at Future Uniqlo Location in Silver Spring

Back in February, we let you know that Downtown Silver Spring landed two major tenants with Uniqlo and Golds Gym signing on. “Coming Soon” signage is now up for Uniqlo (featured photo by Kristen Rowe), which opened its first and only other MoCo location in September of 2018 in Pike & Rose. The Downtown Silver Spring location will be taking over the 10,058 SF space at 914 Ellsworth St that was formerly home to Ulta prior to the move to its current location in Downtown Silver Spring.

Uniqlo will offer the brand’s unique guest experience and its lineup of LifeWear clothes for men, women and kids. Fast Retailing Co. has opened over 2,400 Uniqlo stores worldwide since launching its first store in Hiroshima in 1984. “Uniqlo has created apparel that comes from the Japanese values of simplicity, quality and longevity, featuring universal designs, supreme fit and comfort to improve the daily lives of its customers.”

Police and Family Concerned For Welfare of Missing 11 and 15-Year-Old Brothers

15-year-old Sean and 11-year-old Santino Jones were last seen on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at approximately 10 p.m. near the area of Bethesda Lane and Bethesda Avenue. Sean is approximately 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on right arm and was last seen wearing black jeans and carrying a backpack. Santino is approximately 4-feet, 9-inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. He wears his hair in short locs and has brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and mint green sweatpants. Police and family are concerned for their welfare.

Two art shows showcasing the work of MCPS students will soon be open in Montgomery County– Westfield Montgomery Mall and Rockville Memorial Library. More information on each below:

The MCPS Countywide Art Show at Westfield Montgomery Mall will be available during mall hours from May 2–May 21. The elementary showcase will run from May 2–7; the middle school showcase will be available from May 9–14, and the high school showcase will be open from May 16–21.

MCPS: Art Contest Invites Students to Speak Out Against Hate

Per MCPS: To combat a rise in hateful speech across the country, MCPS is inviting students in Grades 3–12 to create 2D visual artwork that speaks out against hate and advocates for acceptance of all people.

MCPS will showcase entries on its website and award first, second and third places to students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Winners will have their work displayed at the Superintendent’s Fine Arts Celebration, in the Board of Education room and their school will receive a print of the artwork for display. Artwork will be judged based on creativity, craftsmanship and composition. Submissions are due Friday, May 12. Submission Form.

Air Bag Crime Prevention Information and Tips

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) estimates roughly 50,000 air bags are stolen each year, resulting in an annual loss of more than $50 million to owners and insurance companies. Hondas are the most common target of thieves, because their air bags can be removed in as little as 30 seconds.

Air bags are easy to steal and hide.  Thieves resell the stolen air bags on the black market or on internet websites. Unscrupulous collision repair shops purchase the stolen air bags for between $50 to $200 each—which is cheaper than the $1,000 price tag at a dealership—in order to turn a profit, according to the NICB. Some tips to avoid falling victim to air bag thieves, by Takoma Park Police:

Charley Prime (Rio/Gaithersburg): Permanent signage is up at Charley Prime Foods, the new restaurant from Jackie Greenbaum & Gordon Banks (Little Coco’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley, Quarry House Tavern) that will be replacing Tara Thai on the Rio Lakefront boardwalk at 9811 Washington Blvd in Gaithersburg. The restaurant is expected to open this spring.
