MCFRS

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) as well as Emergency Medical and Integrated health Services (EMIHS) responded to a call for an injury sustained by an employee of Taipei Tokyo in the Fallsgrove Village Center in Rockville at approximately 6pm on Saturday evening.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, a restaurant worker suffered a traumatic injury following a mishap involving the grease trap in the kitchen. The injury has been described as a “penetrating type injury.” Co-workers assisted with the medical emergency prior to the arrival of EMIHS. Upon arrival, medics continued providing care and the adult patient was transported to a local hospital with Priority 2 trauma (serious, but non-life threatening injuries). Damascus

Back in May we let you know about ‘That Smoothie Place’ coming to Damascus, taking over the location that was formerly home to Sprint in the Damascus shopping center at 9815 Main Street, suite 106. The store has recently announced that its soft opening is set for Friday, December 9th. Full announcement and more info below:

Damascus

The Damascus Swarmin’ Hornets take on the Oakdale Bears tonight at 7pm at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis for the 3A Maryland State Championship.

The Swarmin’ Hornets defeated River Hill 42-7 in the semifinals. RB Dillon Dunathan rushed for 245 yards and 4 touchdowns in the win. Oakdale, from Frederick County, defeated St. Charles 27-22. Damascus will be appearing in their 17th State Final and will be attempting to win their 12th State championship, which would tie the state record currently held by Seneca Valley.

Silver Spring

Per MCPD: On Friday, September 9, 2022, Kenneth Shawn Purvis entered a Foot Locker store in the 8600 block of Colesville Rd. asked to try on a pair of shoes and stated he wanted to purchase them. When Purvis approached the counter, he appeared to attempt to use his phone to pay with a mobile app and then took cash out of his pocket. He then grabbed a pair of scissors that were on the counter, walked behind the counter and demanded that the employee get out of his way.

The employee complied with his demands. Purvis then took the sneakers from the clerk, removed his shoes and put on the new sneakers. Upon attempting to exit the store, the store manager confronted him. Purvis then brandished the scissors and threatened her before leaving the store. Anyone with information about this suspect or this crime


Bethesda

FBI agent Eduardo Valdivia has been found not guilty by a jury on Friday after he was charged with attempted murder for an off-duty shooting that occurred on a Metro train in Bethesda on December 15, 2020.

According to Fox 5, “Valdivia was on a Red Line train near the Medical Center station in Bethesda on December 15, 2020 when a man allegedly approached him and asked for money. A confrontation developed after Valdivia said no, and the man reportedly muttered expletives while turning away. A video of the incident, released on Wednesday, shows Valdivia fire and shoot the man from close range. The man stumbles and sits in a seat while a nearby passenger moves away from the area. Both Valdivia and the man exit the train.” The man was taken to Suburban Hospital and survived. The video released, which can be seen below, has no audio.


Arts

Earlier this month, more than 12,000 second grade students enjoyed performances by the National Philharmonic Orchestra at the Music Center at Strathmore. This program gives students exposure to the world of classical music in a concert hall setting, inspiring a love and appreciation of music and the arts at a young age. Before attending, second graders learned about the instrument families of the orchestra and how the instruments work together in a concert setting. Video below:

Planning Department Staff studied deed records, census data to identify racial covenants in Montgomery County inside the Capital Beltway; online mapping tool available for the public to explore data

Per Montgomery Planning: The Montgomery County Planning Department presented their initial findings of the first phase of the Mapping Segregation Project to the Montgomery County Planning Board on Thursday, December 1, 2022. Staff from the Department’s Historic Preservation Office provided detailed research on the prevalence of restrictive covenants for the area of Montgomery County located inside the Capital Beltway. Staff also shared the online mapping tool created to illustrate legal discriminatory housing practices, historical patterns of segregation, and Black homeownership in the Downcounty planning area from 1882-1952.


DMV

New Maryland Coach Kevin Willard has Maryland playing great basketball to start the season, coming out to an 7-0 start and ranked #22 in the country going into last night’s game. The team had its toughest test of the season, playing #16 Illinois in College Park. The team was able to defeat its first ranked opponent of the Kevin Willard Era behind a season-high 24 points by Jahmir Young, who is averaging 15.1 points per game this season.The Terps are now 8-0 and one of just fifteen unbeaten teams remaining in the country.

Per UMTerps: Young, Hakim Hart and Donta Scott all had big nights for the Terps in their Big Ten season opener. Young led the way with a season-high 24 points while Hart dropped 17 on 5-of-6 shooting from deep. Scott did a bit of everything inside for Maryland, notching 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.The Terps and Illinois traded baskets early before Maryland exploded for an 11-0 run, dialing up the decibel level in XFINITY. The Illini went on a run of their own, but Hart continued to make clutch threes to turn the momentum back to the Terps as they entered halftime with a 41-34 lead.


Crime

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, December 2, 2022.

At approximately 3:05 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the parking lot of the Summit Hills Apartment complex, in the 8500 block of 16th St., for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 29-year-old Nathaniel Potts, of Silver Spring, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced dead.
