MCPS Proclaims October 12 as “Walk to School Day”

MCPS has proclaimed Wednesday, October 12th as “Walk to School Day.” The event is celebrated by thousands of schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as in more than 40 countries worldwide. The originally chosen date was Wednesday, October 5th, but that is a date of no school for MCPS students and teachers so it was corrected to October 12th.

Per the proclamation: “Children who walk to school have been found to have higher academic performance in terms of attention/alertness, verbal, numeric, and reasoning abilities. Walking to school can further foster personal growth by developing a sense of independent decision making, emotional bonds with peers and the natural environment. Walking to school helps reduce the amount of air pollutants emitted by vehicles.

MoCo Couple Brings Popular Product, Oogie Bear, To Shark Tank; Earns Big Deal From Two Sharks

Potomac residents Sina and Nina Farzin brought their popular product, Oogie Bear, onto Season 14 of Shark Tank with the hopes of raising $400,000 dollars. Oogie Bear is “the only infant booger picker on the market that effectively and safely removes sticky and dried boogers from babies’ nostrils.” Their research and product development facility can be found in Rockville/North Potomac.

The Farzins were interested in parting with 5% of their company for $400,000. It costs approximately $3 dollars to make and sells at a price point up to $24.99. The product is specifically designed for children under the age of two and uses a “patented, award-winning design features a loop end that’s a magnet for sticky boogers and a scoop end that takes care of those dry, crusty ones, plus our trademark bear head, which is way more than just cute: it prevents the tool from going too far into baby’s nose.”

Gaithersburg Oktoberfest Returns Sunday, October 9

The City of Gaithersburg’s Oktoberfest celebration returns after a two-year hiatus on Sunday, October 9. The event will take place from 12-5pm in the Kentlands. Full details below from the City of Gaithersburg:

“Dust off your dirndl, grab your lederhosen and get ready to Prost! The 29th annual celebration of Oktoberfest is on Sunday, October 9, 2022, from noon to 5 p.m. The festival takes place in and around the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion and Kentlands Village Green and along Main Street & Market Square.”

New Station Names and Silver Line Stations Coming Soon With a New Metrorail Map

Per WMATA: Metrorail’s iconic map is getting an update with the addition of the six new Silver Line stations. Beginning today, you’ll start to see new maps rolling out in stations, trains and transit centers, featuring Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn. Also on the new map, Potomac Yard Station is shown as a future station.

Changing the map is no easy feat. With more than 5,000 maps in stations and trains alone, Metro is getting a head start now for what will take more than a month to replace every map in the system in preparation for opening. Digital maps and Metro’s website will be updated upon the opening of the Silver Line extension.

2022 Taiwan Bubble Tea Festival to Take Place on September 24 in Rockville (Street Closures)

Las month we let you know the 2022 Taiwan Bubble Tea Festival will take place on September 24th from 11am until 4pm at Rockville Town Square. The event is being held by Taiwan Sister Cities, an organization “dedicated to promoting, educating, and fostering intercultural understanding and cooperation among the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan.”

Participating in the festival will be Tiger Sugar Rockville, which recently reopened after a car crashed through their storefront. Bun’d Up, which has a Pike & Rose location nearby. Mr. Wish, which opened last year in Rockville. Bao Bei, which started operating out of a kitchen in Rockville recently. Doki Toki, which recently opened in Downtown Crown, and a lot more.

Montgomery County has unveiled a new website to educate and inform the public about flooding issues that may affect residents and businesses throughout the County. The website provides information about frequently flooded roads in the County, steps residents can take to prepare for potential flooding and the availability of flood insurance to all properties in the County.

Montgomery County is committed to addressing adverse flood impacts to residents and businesses in the County. The web address is https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/flooding/. The page can be found on the County’s homepage.

Fall Equinox Arrives at 9:04PM Thursday Night; Friday Brings Highs in the Mid-60s

Summer officially comes to an end as the autumnal, fall, or September equinox arrives at 9:04pm Thursday night. This makes the official start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and Mother Nature is complying as highs are expected to be in the mid-60s in our area on Friday.

We’ve had a couple chillier mornings lately and highs today reached the mid 70s, but Friday is expected to remain below 70 all day. Overnight temperatures into Friday morning are expected to drop into the 50s and feel like the low 40s. Mostly sunny skies are expected, which will make the cooler day feel not-so-bad.

Progress at BabyCat Brewery in Kensington; Aiming for November Opening

Back in March we let you know that MoCo residents Sam Mussomeli and Terry Redmond are bringing BabyCat Brewery to 10241 Kensington Pkwy in Kensington.”Born from a love of nature, pets, family, and beer, BabyCat brewery will forever be dedicated to crafting excellent craft beverages and ensuring you, your family and your friends feel right at home every time you visit us.” Construction is ongoing and approximately 50% complete, Redmond told us. Assembly of the brewhouse is scheduled to begin in the next few weeks and the tap room will be appointed with a rustic industrial old time train station feel, since the brewery will be located just below the CSX and Marc tracks.

The plan is for the brewery to be family focused, as Mussomeli and Redmond would like to maximize the outdoor space. “We plan to have a good size lawn area where we’ll have adirondacks with some fire pits along with picnic tables, room for lawn games and spreading out blankets for families and their dogs.” says Redmond. “We’ll also have a bluestone patio area that will have a cafe type beer garden feel, along with some other surprises we’re not ready yet to reveal.”  The brewery will offer a space for local artists to show their work and would also like to bring in local musicians to perform. Though the brewery won’t offer food of its own, they’ll be working with food trucks and offering QR codes to use at some of the surrounding restaurants.
