Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division, Robbery Section, are investigating an armed robbery of a gas station that occurred on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

At approximately 7:37 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the Exxon gas station in the 9300 block of Georgia Ave. The victim stated to officers that at approximately 6:42 a.m., a Black male, wearing a black Northface jacket with the hood up, black ski mask, black sunglasses, blue jeans, and dark colored shoes, entered the store and walked around.


Maryland

Per the State of Maryland (4.6.23): Governor Wes Moore today announced that Maryland is awarding nearly $92 million to expand high-speed internet access to an estimated 14,500 households and businesses across the state through Connect Maryland, an initiative to close the digital divide through the Office of Statewide Broadband. The Connect Maryland Network Infrastructure Grant Program made 35 awards to Internet Service Providers and local jurisdictions to construct new broadband networks to service unserved households.

“Internet access is essential for Marylanders to have a pathway to receive critical information, be involved with their communities and participate in the local economy,” said Gov. Wes Moore. “These awards help ensure that the infrastructure exists to make Maryland more equitable.”


MoCo Libraries

The renovation work included the replacement of all flooring, reconfiguration and updating of shelving, painting throughout, a new service desk, new lighting, redesign of the children’s reading nook, installation of security equipment, the addition of lounge seating and study areas, replacement of the entry doors, creation of a family restroom and the updating of interior and exterior signs.


Burtonsville

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Recreation will host the “Project Prom Dress” giveaway event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, at the Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville. Any high school student with their school I.D. card can shop, try-on and take home a free dress or suit and accessories so they are ready for their school’s prom. The Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center is located at 14906 Columbia Pike in Burtonsville.

The event will have hundreds of items that have been donated by members of the community throughout February and March. The project helps decrease the financial obstacles of attending prom. WPGC 95.5 FM is co-sponsoring the event. Midday personality Poet will broadcast live from the event and serve as host and celebrity personal shopper for the students.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s eighth annual GreenFest is back this year, taking place in two different locations, ‘GreenFest in the Gardens’ will take place at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton on Saturday, April 22. ‘GreenFest in the City’ will happen at Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Downtown Wheaton on Sunday, April 23. Both will be free, family friendly events organized by a coalition of public, nonprofit and university partners. The Greenfest events, which are part of the County’s celebration of April as “Earth Month,” will feature more than 60 vendors at each location. The vendors represent green businesses, environmental nonprofits, arts and crafts vendors. They will feature educational activities for children and adults.

“GreenFest is one of my favorite yearly County events and I am pleased that we have now extended it to two days this year,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “GreenFest provides County residents climate-friendly actions we can all take at home, at work, and in our daily lives and I hope all community members will join us at Brookside Gardens and Marian Fryer Town Plaza to celebrate Earth Day. Montgomery County is dedicated to building a community culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability, and ‘GreenFest’ is a great example of how we can all work together toward that goal.”


Wheaton

Montgomery County Police responded to a call for a stabbing at approximately 12:25pm on Wednesday, April 5.  According to MCPD, “two adult males were arguing inside of a Metro bus. They both got off the bus near University Blvd West and Amherst Ave.  The male suspect stabbed the victim and ran away. There is no suspect in custody.  The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Officers have secured the area and are looking for the suspect. Major Crimes has responded to the location.

Amherst Ave. is shut down from University Blvd West to Reedie Dr. during this investigation. A news release will be distributed once more information becomes available, including the name of the deceased, following proper notification of next of kin.”


Rockville

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 14-year-old from Rockville. Jamirah Frazier was last seen on Sunday, March 26, 2023, in the 500 block of College Parkway.

Jamirah is approximately 5-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 100 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. It is unknown what she was last seen wearing. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Jamirah Frazier is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line) or the Special Victims Investigations Division at (240) 773-5400. Callers may remain anonymous.


Wheaton

Amherst Ave is shut down from University Blvd West to Reedie Dr. due to the investigation. Drivers should seek an alternate route.  Public safety reporter Cordell Pugh reports that an Off-Duty Montgomery County Police Officer aided the victim prior to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services arrival. Montgomery County Police, Metro Transit Police, and Montgomery County Park Police are all assisting. We will post an update when additional information is available.

Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District – Central Business District Team have arrested and charged 20-year-old Gregory Neverson of Upper Marlboro with illegal possession of a stolen handgun and possession with the intent to distribute Cannabis on Thursday, March 30, 2023.  At approximately 2:45 p.m., officers were conducting bicycle patrol at the Wheaton Metro Station when they detected the smell of marijuana and observed an individual, later identified as Gregory Neverson, smoking in public. Neverson handed over the marijuana cigarette as well as a bag containing suspected marijuana to the officers.

Neverson gave officers consent to a search of his person. While conducting the pat down, officers located a handgun in the right pocket of Neverson’s jacket.  Neverson then resisted arrest and ran away with the handgun towards to the rear area of apartments in the 11100 block of Georgia Ave. A concerned resident witnessed Neverson running away and told officers where Neverson was hiding.
