Update on Miss Toya’s in Silver Spring

Signage is up at Miss Toya’s at 923 Ellsworth Dr in Silver Spring, the former site of Eggspectation. Eggspectation, a Montreal based breakfast restaurant with locations across the world, closed back in September 2020 after 15 years in that location. Miss Toya’s is a Cajun/Creole restaurant by local chef Jeffeary Miskiri. On Monday the restaurant posted on its Instagram page that they are now hiring and according to an Instagram story by Miskiri Hospitality, the restaurant will be opening in about 30 days.

Miskiri is the founder and owner of Miskiri Hospitality Group, which describes itself as a unique collective of Black, family and woman-owned products and restaurants in the DC area. The group’s restaurants include Creole on 14th and Po Boy Jim’s in DC, as well as Suga & Spice, listed as coming soon to Hyattsville. Miskiri told Source of the Spring last year that “Miss Toya’s is the sister restaurant to my full-service restaurant, Creole on 14^th, the reason behind it being to expand on Creole and Cajun food” and “The diversity and the body of language that that cuisine presents is so large that I knew that I could something similar, but totally different at the same time,” and that he’s “just really excited to bring that Cajun-Creole flair and twist to the neighborhood.”

Food Distribution Event Today in Gaithersburg For Those in Need

There will be a food distribution event today, June 7, between 2-3pm at 8921 Warfield Rd (Church of the Nazarene) in Gaithersburg. Please remain in your vehicle while food is being delivered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Black Rock Center has temporarily transformed into the Upcounty Consolidation Hub. The Hub provides essential food, baby, and household supplies to over 1,000 families disproportionally impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic every week. Learn more at blackrockcenter.org

Montgomery County Council Seeks Applicants for County Board of Appeals

By law, no more than three members of the board shall be from the same political party. This position can be filled by a Republican or a voter who is unaffiliated with a party, or a voter who is a member of another party officially recognized by the Board of Elections. This position cannot be filled by a Democrat.

The current members of the Board include Chair John Pentecost (Democrat), Richard Melnick (Unaffiliated), Caryn Hines (Democrat), and Roberto Pinero (Democrat). Members of County Boards, Committees and Commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time.

MCPS Releases “After-Action” Report on January Shooting at Magruder High School

As required by Maryland state law, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) submitted a required “After-Action” report of the Jan. 21 shooting incident to the Maryland Center for School Safety. The center has reviewed the report and is making it available to members of the media by request. We provide that report to you here so that our community has a full understanding of what happened and what is being done to implement lessons learned.

MCDOT to Have Online and In-Person Events Seeking Input on Flash Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Plans for North Bethesda, New Hampshire Avenue and Rockville Pike/Frederick Road

Residents can provide input throughout the month of June. MCDOT is offering multiple opportunities to learn about Flash, engage with project teams, have questions answered and provide feedback.

PRIDE in the Park: An LGBTQ Comedy Show Happens This Thursday, June 9

This event will be held on the lawn of Fairview Urban Park and begins at 6:00 pm with food and beverage for purchase from Giacomo’s Brick Oven Pizza, Clayboys Shave Ice, and Astro Lab Brewing. The show kicks off at 7:00 pm and guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and picnic blankets for viewing.

This event is intended for mature audiences ages seventeen and up and is not recommended for viewers under seventeen. Viewer discretion is advised.

Joseph is approximately 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weighs 100 pounds. She has brown eyes and curly black hair, styled in a ponytail. She also has clear braces on her teeth. She was last seen wearing a black, long-sleeve t-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

Brazilian Bakery in Takoma Park Has Closed

Brazilian Bakery at 7639 New Hampshire Ave in Takoma Park has closed, according to a message on the store’s Instagram page. “We are heartbroken to announce that yesterday was our last day in operation. 💔 We are so thankful for this community and all of your love and support. We will always remember you. We are looking forward to other future endeavors and hope to see you all in the future.” The original location at 13655 Georgia Ave in Aspen Hill remains open.

Montgomery County Releases Third Quarter Updates of Climate Action Plan Implementation That Include Progress on More Than 70 Recommendations

The Climate Action Plan (CAP), unveiled in 2021, is a strategic plan to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent by 2027 and 100 percent by 2035. The plan also seeks to reduce climate-related risks to the County’s residents, businesses, and the built and natural environment. The annual climate work plan describes the actions that the County is making progress on in the near term in support of the CAP.

“As showcased in the Quarter 3 updates, Montgomery County continues to make progress toward meeting our climate goals,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Addressing climate change supports and builds on the County’s efforts to improve quality-of-life and economic vitality in our community. I am proud of Montgomery County’s leadership on climate.”

Gaithersburg Man Arrested for Shots Fired Incident in Frederick

A Gaithersburg man was arrested and on June 1 and charged with multiple handgun offenses after an incident in Frederick that occurred on May 3. Details per the Frederick Police Department below:

On May 3, 2022, around 2:32 PM, officers from the Frederick Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to the area of the 1000 Block of Heather Ridge Drive for a reported firearm discharge. While officers responded, additional 911 calls were received about a vehicle crash in the area of Taney Avenue and Young place. Investigators located evidence at both locations connecting the incidents. No one was struck by the gunfire.

Garrett Park Train Station Vandalized With Hate Symbols and Slogans

The Garrett Park commuter train station on Rokebay Ave in Garrett Park was vandalized Sunday night/Monday morning with “white power” and other racist slogans and images spray painted throughout the building. According to a representative from the Town of Garrett Park, Montgomery County Police, as well as CSX, which owns the station, have been notified.

The Garrett Park station is served by limited trains on the MARC Brunswick Line, some of which stop at the station and some of which are flag stops, according to MARC.
