This should read “Inaugural California Wine Festival to be Held at Downtown Crown Wine & Beer.” An annual event can’t happen until it is held a second time.

Thanks! The event listing calls it “the first annual.” Our guess is they are planning to do it each year, which would make it annual.

Planning to have it a second time still doesn’t make it the first annual.

We can’t speak for them, but per Paul Brian (the author of Common Errors in the English Language) “Some people get upset when the “first annual” occurrence of some event is announced, arguing that it doesn’t become annual until it’s been repeated. But “first annual” simply means “the first of what is planned to be an annual series of events”—it’s a fine expression.” Personally, we understood what it means and are fine with “first annual” and “inaugural.”
