Council President Evan Glass Releases Statement on the FY24 Recommended Operating Budget

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Council President Evan Glass made the following statement today after County Executive Marc Elrich transmitted his Fiscal Year 2024 Recommended Operating Budget to the Council:
“The Council has received County Executive Marc Elrich’s Fiscal Year 2024 Recommended Operating Budget for Montgomery County. I appreciate County Executive Elrich and his team’s work to develop and propose his budget recommendations. Now the Council’s budget deliberations, on behalf of the County’s more than 1.1 million residents, are officially underway for the new fiscal year.

“Reviewing and approving the budget is one of the most critical responsibilities of the Council. Every budget brings its own set of challenges and opportunities, and it’s the Council’s obligation to ensure that this budget positions the County for long-term success and economic prosperity.

“As we undertake this important task, the Council will provide thorough oversight to ensure taxpayer investments are used prudently. We must balance the needs of today with those of tomorrow, which include supporting our schools, our teachers, our first responders, our healthcare professionals and other frontline workers.

“Public engagement is a critical component of this process and helps us develop a budget that meets the needs of community members in every corner of the County. I encourage residents to participate in the upcoming public hearings, submit testimony to the Council and let us know how we can better serve this County.”

The Council’s public hearings on the operating budget are scheduled for April 11 at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and April 13 at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Those interested in testifying at the public hearings in person or virtually can sign up on the Council’s webpage or by calling 240-777-7803 starting on March 20 at 9 a.m. through April 10 at 2 p.m. The Council also encourages residents to use #MoCoFY24 to communicate their views on the budget via social media. Spanish language interpretation will be available both in-person and virtually. Interpretation in other languages is available upon request with at least three working days’ notice.

Prerecorded audio or video or written testimony can also be submitted on the Council’s webpage. In addition, testimony can be sent by regular mail to: County Council, 100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, MD 20850, or by calling the Council budget hotline at 240-777-7802.   Information on the FY24 Recommended Operating Budget can be found on the Office of Management and Budget’s webpage.
