MCPS Approves Updated Health Metric Matrix, Delays Any Possible Return Until February 1
Today, the MCPS Board of Education approved a health metric matrix that has considerable changes to the previous one that was released earlier.
The new health metric matrix shows special student populations and group 1 returning to school buildings under a 14 day average new case rate of 10-15 per 100k. Additionally, Groups 2 and 3 are now under consideration for partial in-person experience at that same benchmark.

The older matrix, which was initially proposed, shows only special student populations being considered for (minimal) in person experiences at the 14 day average new case rate of 10-15 per 100k. The initially proposed matrix also shows groups of students going back in 3 phases, with the last group going in at an average new case rate of less than 5 people.
The new, approved matrix shows more students going back sooner, with ALL students having the option for a partial in person experience at a new case rate of 5-10 per 100k, and consideration for all students at a case rate of 10-15 per 100k.
Currently, MoCo is at an average case rate of 41.9 people per 100k, which is significantly higher than the benchmarks that would allow for in-person learning.
Additionally, the previous plan by the Board of Education had some students entering the buildings as early as January 12. Today the BOE voted to change that– now February 1 is the earliest that any student could enter buildings, assuming that the health metrics have aligned with the approved benchmarks.
