Detectives Investigate Shed Burglary; Photos of Suspect Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Investigative Section are investing a shed burglary that occurred on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, in the 12300 block of Atherton Dr. in Silver Spring. Detectives have released photos of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 6:25 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report of a burglary that just occurred. The investigation by detectives determined that the unknown male suspect went into the victim’s shed and placed stolen tools in a black backpack. As the suspect was walking away from the scene, the adult male victim confronted him and pulled on the backpack, causing the stolen tools to fall. The suspect walked away from the scene without any stolen property.

Large Crowds Protest Ahead of Today’s Board of Education Meeting

Large crowd (hundreds as of 1:30pm) are protesting outside of the Board of Education meeting at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville (850 Hungerford Drive). The protest stems from MCPS’ no-opt-out policy when it comes to the use of LGBTQ+ inclusive books in schools. Video of the protests can be seen below.

A Montgomery Village resident is $107,801 richer after purchasing a winning lottery ticket in Prince George’s County. The Montgomery County woman is still pondering what to do with the windfall and quickly left to celebrate her Lottery luck with loved ones. Kenilworth Liquors at 5401 Kenilworth Avenue in Riverdale Park shares in her good fortune, receiving a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a progressive jackpot-winning FAST PLAY ticket on June 22. Concern for Missing 15-Year-Old

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Beatrice Cole, a missing 15-year-old from Germantown.

Beatrice was last seen on Friday, June 23, 2023, at approximately 12 a.m., leaving her residence in the 19700 block of Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown. Beatrice is approximately 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Evelyn was last seen on Friday, June 23, 2023, at approximately 6 p.m., at her residence in the 3500 block of Pear Tree Court in Aspen Hill. Evelyn is approximately 5-feet, 3-inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Collision Leads to Overturned Vehicle in Aspen Hill

A collision has lead to an overturned vehicle on Connecticut Ave at Georgia Avenue in Aspen Hill on Tuesday afternoon. Metrobus has warned of possible delays in north directions due to the blockage.

11:38am update by MCPD: The victim has been transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries at this time. This appears to be an isolated incident.

Emily Briton Announced as Sixth President of MedStar Montgomery Medical Center

MedStar Health announced that Emily Briton will be the newest president of MedStar Montgomery Medical Center and senior vice president, MedStar Health as of July 1, 2023. Briton previously held several leadership roles within the MedStar Health system, most recently serving as chief operating officer and senior vice president at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C.

“It is a tremendous honor to be joining MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in this exciting role,” said Briton, a longtime resident of Montgomery County. “We have important work ahead of us, bringing high-quality personalized care to our community and continuing our mission to be the trusted leader in caring for people and advancing health.” The announcement follows news of the appointment of President Thomas J. Senker, FACHE, as the next president of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, also effective July 1, 2023.

The Moco native played many sports growing up (baseball, basketball, football, and wrestling) while he was a student at Redland Middle School and Magruder High School. He was also a longtime counselor at Seneca Creek Day Camp before turning his attention to theater and participating in three productions per year.

In 2003, he starred as Luke in the first season of the Fox teen drama, The O.C. He has starred in many movies, television shows, and theatrical productions since then, including his role as Will Lexington in the ABC drama Nashville. He currently stars in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Dr. Link)– a role he has played since 2018.

Gaithersburg Planning Commission Set to Make Recommendation on Annexation of Walnut Hill Shopping Center

The City of Gaithersburg Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled to make a recommendation on the proposed annexation of the Walnut Hill shopping center at its Wednesday, July 5, 2023 meeting at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. The Mayor and City Council have tentatively scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall (virtual participation will also be available).

As we previously reported, the Applicant, Granite Partners, has submitted Annexation Petition X-9510-2023, proposing to annex three parcels that currently abut the City boundary, along with a portion of the North Westland Drive right of way. The Annexation Plan proposes several changes to the existing Walnut Hill Shopping Center, including constructing a new freestanding convenience store with accessory gasoline pumps (MoCo and Gaithersburg’s second Sheetz location), demolishing an existing small freestanding building on the south side of the property, renovating the exterior of the main shopping center building, and making improvements to the parking lot and landscaping. The shopping center will also be welcoming Aldi in the space that was previously home to Weis. No changes are proposed for the other two properties included in the Annexation Petition.

MD Attorney General Brown Releases Statement on One-Year Anniversary of the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade:

“One year ago, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a devastating blow to basic rights of Americans by overturning Roe v. Wade in an outrageous and harmful decision that stripped away the fundamental right of individuals to control their own healthcare decisions. This decision set us back 50 years as we continue to witness the erosion of reproductive rights in anti-choice states across the country. The decision increased risks to the health and well-being of people throughout the nation, and erected more barriers to pursuing socioeconomic opportunities, with a disproportionate impact on people of color and those in overburdened communities.
