MoCo Native Jordan Hawkins Hits Six Three Pointers As UCONN Beats Gonzaga to Advance to the Final Four

Yesterday we highlighted MoCo native Jordan Hawkins as UCONN prepared to play Gonzaga in an Elite Eight matchup. The young man led his team to a trouncing of Gonzaga, scoring 20 points and hitting six threes to take the #3 seed UCONN to the Final Four with an 82-54 win. Hawkins is a Montgomery County native who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and Gaithersburg High School for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to DeMatha. UCONN plays the winner of Miami/Texas on April 1st.

Hawkins was a top 50 recruit, who came to UConn following two years at powerhouse program DeMathaCatholic (Hyattsville, Md.) under Coach Mike Jones. He played AAU for Team Durant under Coach Angel Hernandez, and as a senior at DeMatha, averaged 19.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.9 blocks, while shooting .636 overall and .464 from three-point range to lead DeMatha to an 11-0 record and was named 2020-21 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. Hawkins was a two-time Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention pick and averaged 20.2 points per game as a sophomore when he was at Gaithersburg High School (per UCONN).

Miriam is 3-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs approximately 115 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a white jacket and black/white tie dye pants.  Miriam may be traveling to Tennessee with her 40-year-old grandmother, Carla Vanessa Martinez, in a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck bearing Tennessee license plates. Carla is 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.  Family and police are concerned for her welfare. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Miriam Garcia is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.

Montgomery County Forest Conservation Laws amended to achieve “No Net Loss of Forest”

Approved amendments to Montgomery County will achieve greater forest planting and forest conservation in the county

Per Montgomery Planning: The Montgomery County Planning Department’s work to achieve a more balanced approach to forest conservation in Montgomery County through its No Net Loss Initiative has resulted in the passage of Bill 25-22 by the Montgomery County Council. Bill 25-22, along with a County Council resolution to adopt Montgomery County Planning Board Regulation No. 25-22 on Forest Conservation, will amend Chapter 22A of the Montgomery County Code and Chapter 22A of the Code of Montgomery County Regulations.

Notice of Street Construction In Gaithersburg Starting March 27 Through April (S. Summit Ave. & Hutton St.)

The Department of Public Works announced today that M.T. Laney, a Washington Gas contractor, will be preforming road repairs on South Summit Avenue & Hutton Street. The work is anticipated to begin on Monday, March 27, 2023, and will continue through April, weather permitting. The repairs will consist of asphalt milling, resurfacing & striping.

No road closures are planned, but drivers should expect minor delays at various times while work is in progress. On-street parking will be restricted at various times. “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of construction activity. These signs will be marked with the dates & times of the parking restrictions. A Washington Gas contractor will perform the work Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Police Investigating Fatal Collision Involving Pedestrian Who Was Struck by Two Separate Drivers

Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred Saturday, March 25, 2023, at approximately 01:50 a.m., on Columbia Pike near Hillwood Drive in Silver Spring. According to MCPD, “The preliminary investigation has revealed that an adult male pedestrian was struck by two vehicles that were traveling northbound on Columbia Pike, just south of Hillwood Dr. One of the drivers remained at the scene after the collision. The other driver left the scene and reported the collision hours later at a police station. 

The Montgomery County Department of Police, Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this collision. A news release will be distributed once more information is available, including the name of the deceased following proper notification of next of kin.      Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.”

MCPD Attempting to Identify Man Found in Silver Spring

Montgomery County Police are asking the public’s assistances in identifying a man found today in Silver Spring.  Per MCPD: The Montgomery County Department of Police is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying an adult male who was located at the Blair House Apartments in the 8200 block of 16th St. in Silver Spring. He has no identification and is not able to give his name.

Anyone with information regarding this man is asked to call Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).

MCFRS Respond to Collision with Entrapment Saturday Afternoon; Six Transported to Hospital

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision on E Randolph Rd, between Stratford Garden Dr & Tourmaline Ct in Fairland on Saturday afternoon. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collision involved involved two vehicles. Three individual had to extricated after being trapped in their vehicles and a total of six patients (4 adults/2 teens) were transported for injuries, including one adult with Priority 1 trauma.

Some lanes are currently blocked. A sand truck has been requested due to fuel/oil spillage on the road. We will post an update when additional information is available.

MoCo’s Jordan Hawkins Leads UCONN Into Elite Eight Matchup Tonight

Jordan Hawkins, an All-Big East 6’5, 190 pound guard for the #4 seed UCONN Huskies, will lead his team against the #3 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs tonight at 8:49pm as the teams compete in an Elite Eight battle to get into the Final Four. MCFRS Respond to Fire Friday Night

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 15900blk of Barnesville Rd in Boyds on Friday night for the report an outside fire.  According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, firefighters encountered three buildings (two sheds and a 2-car garage) on fire a half-mile off the road. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Piringer tweeted, “Power supplied by extension cords/power strips. Due to damage & numerous competent ignitions sources, incl smoking materials.” Damage is estimated to be ~15K. We will post an update if additional information is available.

Construction Continues at Upcoming Auntie Anne/Cinnabon Location in Rio

Back in November we let you know of the impending arrival of an Auntie Anne’s/Cinnabon combination restaurant at 220 Boardwalk Place in Rio, set to take over the location that was recently home to Lilly Magilly’s (the cupcakery is preparing for a move to a new, soon-to-be-announced location). Construction is ongoing (photo below) and though an opening date isn’t yet available, we’d expect a mid-2023 opening.

The two brands, popular for their presence in malls, are co-branding to open locations across the country. I’m recent years, Cinnabon left then returned to Montgomery Mall. There’s also an existing Cinnabon location in Wheaton Mall. Auntie Anne’s has locations at the outlets in Clarksburg, Ellsworth Place Mall, Montgomery Mall, and Wheaton Mall in MoCo.

Willie T’s Seafood Shack to Open on March 27

In November 2021 we let you know that Willie T’s Seafood Shack and BRB (be right burger) would be moving in to 9326 Georgia Avenue (joint restaurant), between Islands Tropical Ice Cream and Goldberg’s New York Bagels, in the location that was formerly home to Andy’s Restaurant. Willie T’s will be opening on Monday, March 27th according to an Instagram post by the restaurant (see below, h/t @SilverSpringEats). Willie T’s will be open at 11am until 10pm on Monday.

The restaurant had an ABS Hearing over a year ago, on February 3rd, 2022, for a “Class BD, Beer, Wine, and Liquor License, On and Off Sale for Beer and Wine and On Sale Only for Liquor, for the premises known as Willie T’s Seafood Shack-BRB which premises are located at 9326 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910”, which was approved.
