Montgomery Parks offering up to $100,000 to winner of public art competition

Department is accepting submissions for a new public art installation in downtown Silver Spring park 

Montgomery Parks is looking for an artist to create a permanent art installation at Gene Lynch Urban Park in downtown Silver Spring. The newly constructed park sits on a quarter acre near the Silver Spring Metro and the Sarbanes Transit Center and will open this spring. It includes an open lawn area, a pergola with bench swings and a 10 x 13-foot concrete wall —the location of the new public artwork.

MCFRS Respond to Fire in Montgomery Village Thursday Night

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a fire reported in the bedroom of a two story, middle-of-the-row townhouse on Club Lake Rd in Montgomery Village at approximately 9:30pm on Thursday night (video below).

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, all occupants were able to get out as heavy smoke was showing upon the arrival of multiple crews. The fire extended to the roof and attic before the bulk of it was knocked out by approximately 9:55pm. There was little to no extension to neighboring/adjacent townhomes and no injuries were reported. Approximately $325K in damage and three adults have been displaced. A cat is also missing.

Rockville Man Arrested for Attempted Second Degree Murder

On February 12, 2023, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Rockville City Police Officers responded to the 400 block of McArthur Drive for a report of a stabbing that just occurred. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim suffering from multiple stab wounds to his face and head. Officers immediately rendered first aid and the victim was transported to a local area hospital where he is recovering in stable condition.

During the course of the investigation, the Rockville City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect, Santos A. Gomez-Gonzalez, 24, of the 400 block of McArthur Drive, charging him with Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Assault-First Degree, Assault-Second Degree, and Reckless Endangerment.

Governor Moore Signs Executive Order to Strengthen Government Accountability for Maryland’s Minority Business Enterprise Program

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today signed an executive order to underscore his administration’s commitment to strengthening participation, compliance, and accountability for Maryland’s Minority Business Enterprise program. The executive order—the first minority business enterprise-related order issued by any Maryland governor—will provide the Moore-Miller administration with data to assess Maryland’s current Minority Business Enterprise program performance and inform program development strategy.

“I’ve said this before and I will say this again, I am data driven and heart-led; the data shows that we are not meeting the mark in our Minority Business Enterprise program, so my heart is saying we must do everything we can to not only meet our goals, but exceed them,” said Governor Moore. “Our administration has the most diverse cabinet in history, and it’s critical that we take the first step forward in delivering more access and opportunities to our minority-owned businesses in order to create a more economically competitive and inclusive state.”

Tuesday Morning to Close Aspen Hill and Rockville Locations

Tuesday Morning, an off-price retailer of home goods and décor, will close both Montgomery County locations– Aspen Hill (13832 Georgia Avenue in the Northgate shopping center) and Rockville (1616 East Jefferson St. #12B in Congressionak Plaza). According to a Business Insider report, “the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday. As part of the process, the retailer wants to close 265 stores across the US, or more than half of all of its stores, according to a document filed in bankruptcy court in Northern Texas.” Specific closing information for each location to come soon.

This comes a few months after the company announced that it has entered into an agreement to secure $32 million in convertible debt financing from a special purpose vehicle (“SPV”) formed by Retail Ecommerce Ventures LLC (“REV”), the owner of a diverse portfolio of consumer brands that includes Pier 1 Imports (“Pier 1”), Linens ‘n Things, Stein Mart, Modell’s Sporting Goods, and Ayon Capital, LLC (“Ayon”).

$1.5 million Is Available Through Two Grant Programs for Nonprofits Working With ‘Underserved Communities’ in Montgomery County

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the Montgomery County Council today announced a total of $1.5 million will be available through two new grant programs for County nonprofit organizations that work with “underserved communities.” Both programs are intentionally very flexible to allow nonprofits to identify their own needs and new programs best suited to support their communities.

Eligible nonprofits can now apply for funds from the programs. Applications are due by 9 a.m. on Wednesday March 15. An online information session for the grant program will be held from 1:30-3 p.m. on Friday Feb. 17. To join the information session or see its recording, click here.

Urgent Care Doctor Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Patients

Per MCPD: A Montgomery County physician has been arrested and charged with rape and a sexual assault that occurred in a Silver Spring urgent care facility. Two female victims visited the urgent care on separate dates and allege that Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed Malek groped, inappropriately touched, and sexually assaulted the victims during routine examinations. Each of the assaults occurred at the Advanced Walk-in Urgent Care located at 10800 Lockwood Dr. in Silver Spring.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) suspect that there may be more victims of the 58-year-old doctor and are asking for them to come forward.

Two Men Charged for Possession of Handguns and Attempted Carjacking; One Suspect Arrested After Attempting to Enter Vehicle Driven by On-Duty Police Officer

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 21-year-old Marc Anthony Dacenay, Jr. and 20-year-old Marquie Antonio Dacenay, both of Waldorf, with charges related to an attempted carjacking that occurred on Wednesday, February 15, 2023.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 900 block of Ellsworth Dr. for the report a strong-arm robbery. The preliminary investigation revealed that the juvenile male victim was sitting inside the lobby of the Regal Majestic movie theater, when he was approached by one suspect, who punched him in the face and stole the victim’s personal property. A second suspect approached and both suspects punched the victim several times. Then, the suspects left the movie theater.

Forging Freedom: Endurance, Escape, and Rockville’s Underground Railroad is an exhibit on the story of Rockville in the era of the Underground Railroad, when slavery cast a shadow over life in this farming town, and separatist tensions steadily propelled the nation towards war. Come learn about the brave fugitives who fled slavery in Rockville, the abolitionist network that helped, and the endurance of the enslaved community.

Barra Brava Signage Now Up at Upcoming Burtonsville Location

We previously let you know that Barra Brava Cevicheria Peruana is “coming soon” to the location that was previously home to Old Hickory Grill at 15420 Old Columbia Pike B in Burtonsville. Signage is now up at the restaurant. Barra Brava opened its first location at 15921 N Frederick Rd in Rockville in October of 2017.  The restaurant hopes to open in a few months.

The menu consists of seafood entrees, a variety of ceviches, non-seafood entrees like lomo saltado, aji de gallina, and more. We’ll have a specific opening timeframe/date in the coming months. Photos of some of the dishes available at the Rockville location can be seen below:
