Olney

We first reported back in November 2019 that the Olney Crab House was coming to the location that used to be home to The Olney Tavern (18200 Georgia Avenue) in the Hillcrest Center in Olney.  Renovations on the building began in the summer of 2020 but since then, the building has largely remained dormant and “For Lease” signs were placed back on the building in late 2020.

Today we were informed by the property management of center that the original owners had pulled out of the location and new owners have just recently taken over the lease. The new owners are still planning to open the restaurant as a crab house.  No timeframe for opening was provided.

Beyond MoCo

Montgomery County Native Sofia Harrison will be playing in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the Philippines in the semifinal against South Korea on Thursday, February 3rd.

The Philippine women’s football team on Monday booked a ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating Chinese Taipei in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinal round of the Women’s Asian Cup in India to make it to the semifinals and qualify for the World Cup. No Philippine football team, men or women, has ever qualified for the World Cup until now.

Event

Beautiful venue; great art, gifts and hand-crafted items; refreshments; and meet the award-winning painters, photographers, mixed media artists, ceramicists, fiber artists, and more – some 40 artists in all. It’s an extraordinary array of framed wall works, 3-d media including sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, and fiber pieces, and unframed prints.

Among them, you’ll see:

Derwood

Back in April we let you know that Feasty Crab would be taking over the old Red, Hot, & Blue location at 16811 Crabbs Branch Way in Derwood/Redland/Rockville.

We spoke with a representative at the restaurant back in October who told us that it would be open “in about a month” pending inspections. Things have taken a little longer than expected, but only the final inspection is left and the restaurant hopes to open this month.

Olney

A suspect is in custody after firing a single shot at Maryland-National Capital Park Police Officers this morning in  Olney.  The incident occurred at Georgia Ave and King William Dr after the suspect fled from police after an earlier incident at the Olney Swim Center.

Officers did not return fire and there were no injuries to officers. A public information officer is on the scene and more information will be released soon.

Memorial

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 12, at Cedar Brook Church at 23700 Stringtown Road in Clarksburg at 3pm for 2021 Northwest High School graduate Brian Nichols. Nichols passed away unexpectedly on January 24.

Jag Nation is extremely devastated to learn of the passing of Brian Nichols a 2021 grad. He could put a smile on your face during the worst of days. He always put others happiness first and truly cared for all. He truly had a positive impact on all and will be missed dearly.❤️ pic.twitter.com/zhUDTOVFVD

Bethesda

The United States Department of Defense announced the contract awarded to Bethesda’s Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin, which is headquartered in Montgomery County, has been awarded a $1,420,000,000 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the C-130J mission sustainment support effort.

White Oak

Back in July we shared preliminary plans for the upcoming White Oak Town Center that included updated renderings. In the renderings there was a noticeable change in the grocery store that was depicted. In earlier drawings, the grocery store designs resembled Trader Joe’s, but the updated renderings resembled Amazon Fresh.

This morning, BizJournals reported that “Amazon has reached a deal to open a new supermarket at a long-planned Silver Spring redevelopment fewer than three miles from the Food and Drug Administration’s campus”, referring to White Oak Town Center. “The team behind the White Oak Town Center has swapped a 41,000-square-foot Amazon-branded market, likely an Amazon Fresh, in for what had been a roughly 16,000-square-foot Trader Joe’s.”
