Beyond MoCo

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration anticipates improving nearly 3,400 lane miles of pavement across Maryland through patching and resurfacing efforts during Fiscal Year 2026, which begins July 1.

Crime

Torrey Damien Moore, 34, of Silver Spring, was sentenced in Montgomery County Circuit Court to three consecutive life terms and an additional 80 years in prison following two separate murder convictions. He was found guilty in the 2022 shooting deaths of a gas station employee and his pregnant girlfriend, marking the County’s first conviction for the murder of a viable fetus. (more…)

Join Us for StoryBox Comics Fair, a two-day festival celebrating local and independent comics authors!

Day 1 – Saturday, June 27th, 11-5pm @ DwightMess compound (805 Silver Spring Ave): Events are open to the public, admission is FREE. Featuring Special Guest Artists, gallery exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, a modeling session (suggested donation) and exhibitors, you can dig in to indie comics and also tour the compound, which features an extensive comics collection, a rare video collection, Risograph and screenprinting studios.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland unsealed two indictments charging a South Carolina man with defrauding Medicare out of over $5 million through a COVID-19 laboratory testing scheme and defrauding customers of his private jet company out of approximately $15 million. (more…)

Morris Day, perhaps best known as the charismatic lead singer of the funk band The Time, spent time growing up in Gaithersburg, MD. He talks about working at Montgomery Wards in Gaithersburg (where Burlington is today) in an interview five years ago with Vlad TV. The clip where he mentioned Gaithersburg can be seen here.

MoCo Government

Montgomery County Council President Kate Stewart said the Council is monitoring the Trump Administration’s designation of the County as a “sanctuary jurisdiction” and is coordinating with local and state partners while reaffirming its commitment to supporting the rights of all residents. On Thursday, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich also issued a statement in response to the Trump Administration’s designation of the county as a “sanctuary jurisdiction.” (more…)

MCPS recently shared that the community gathered at Albert Einstein High School on May 20th to celebrate the Class of 2025 Business Management and Finance (BMF) Cluster graduation, honoring over 150 students from 10 high schools with five students receiving $500 scholarships to help fund their postsecondary education
