MoCo History

Montgomery County, located in the state of Maryland, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1776. The idea to create this county emerged from Thomas S. Wootton, who proposed dividing Frederick County into three smaller counties: Frederick, Montgomery, and Washington. In 1798, a significant legislative act was passed that established five election districts within Montgomery County: Berry, Clarksburg, Cracklin, Medley, and Rockville.

Community

The Kentlands Bar Crawl, an event that began over 20 years ago, has grown to attract more than 150 participants this year and raised $1,720 for Feed the Fridge in 2024. This year, the event returns on April 5th to benefit The Rainbow Place Shelter.

Rainbow Place is an emergency shelter dedicated to supporting women at the beginning of their transition out of homelessness. Their primary focus is to ensure the safety of the women they serve during the harsh winter months and to assist them in moving towards stable housing.


Beyond MoCo

Redfin, a leading national real estate brokerage, has compiled a list of the “Hottest Neighborhoods in 2025.” This list is based on an analysis that ranks U.S. zip codes within the 150 most populous metro areas, utilizing year-over-year growth in listing views on Redfin.com and the Redfin Compete Score– an indicator of how competitive it is to secure a home in these areas. One Maryland city made it on the list.

Gaithersburg

417 Development LLC has submitted a revised schematic development plan that proposes to redevelop 481 N Frederick Ave and 101 Lakeforest Blvd with a new 8-story multi-family residential building with up to 410 units and a ground floor commercial use. The existing office building at 702 Russell Ave will remain with minor site edge improvements.

MCPS is hosting public information meetings on boundary studies for the reopening of Charles W. Woodward High School, the opening of Crown High School and the expansion of Damascus High School. These sessions will provide important details on the boundary study scope, process and opportunities for future engagement.

According to a Deadline report, Landmark Theatres is making significant strides with extensive renovations planned for three of its premier locations, including its sole Montgomery County, MD site– Bethesda Row Cinemas (7235 Woodmont Avenue). Additionally, President Kevin Holloway has been elevated to the position of chief executive.
