Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School (13737 Wisteria Dr. Germantown, MD) evacuated the building on Thursday morning due to a fire alarm. The school sent out a message assuring the community the students and staff are safe, but moved to Lake Seneca ES due to the low temperatures. Due to a failed water pipe, the school is without heat and water and the decision to close the school was made. Full communication from the school can be be seen below:

The iconic Dunkin’ at 2405 Reedie Drive in Wheaton is temporarily closed as it undergoes major renovations. An exact reopening date isn’t available, but the remodeling appears to be extensive for the store that has been there for more than 50 years. On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.
An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.
On Wednesday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced the appointment of Tabatha Robinson as director of the Maryland Cannabis Administration. Robinson is currently acting chief equity officer for the New York State Office of Cannabis Management and will begin her new role in Maryland on February 19. (more…)
Charm City Run has closed its Gaithersburg location (225 Kentlands Blvd) permanently after two and a half years. The store opened in the former Fleet Feet space in June 2022 (Fleet Feet has since reopened in a different Kentlands location).
The Montgomery County Police Department announced the arrest of 32-year-old Kofi Aidoo of Silver Spring on firearms-related charges, including prohibited possession of a firearm, after recovering a stolen handgun near Glenmont United Methodist Church. In response to inquiries about the law enforcement presence, police confirmed that the activity was solely related to the criminal investigation and had no connection to immigration status or enforcement.
Jean-Pierre Velasco, 21, of Silver Spring, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Circuit Court to two counts of manslaughter by motor vehicle for a 2023 crash in Rockville that killed two 19-year-olds, with sentencing set for April 7, 2025 (more…)
