Systemwide Closure Days Added to 2022–2023 MCPS School Calendar

On Oct. 25, the Board of Education adopted a resolution to make modifications to the 2022–2023 school year calendars that include additional systemwide closure days during the winter and spring breaks. The following modifications have been made to the Traditional and Innovative School Year Calendars:

WHEREAS, Modifications made to the 2021–2022 Traditional and Innovative School Year Calendar proved to have positive impacts and were well-received by all stakeholders, and

WHEREAS, Systemwide closures and additional days of break more commonly are seen as a best practice in neighboring and comparative school districts nationally, and

WHEREAS, Montgomery County Public Schools introduced a new designation of systemwide closure last school year, and used systemwide closure in this year’s calendar on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, and Monday June 19, 2023, to denote a time when all schools and offices are closed, and staff in all locations are able to be off, with no loss of wages or leave; and

WHEREAS, The current 2022–2023 Traditional School Year Calendar has 182 student days, 2 days more than required by state law; and

WHEREAS, There exist opportunities for the school system to include more systemwide closures by modifying the 2022–2023 school calendar, and permanently adding these closures to future calendars during the development process, without impacting the number of student instructional days; and

WHERAS, The 2022–2023 Traditional and Innovative School Year Calendars may be modified to make Thursday, December 29 and Friday, December 30, 2022; Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6, 2023, systemwide closure days for Montgomery County Public Schools; now therefore be it

Resolved, That the 2022–2023 Traditional and Innovative School Year Calendars be modified to make Thursday, December 29 and Friday, December 30, 2022; Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6, 2023, systemwide closure days for Montgomery County Public Schools; and be it further
