Pie Contest to Crown The Best Pie Will Take Place Sunday, September 17th

The Takoma Park Farmers Market is hosting its annual pie contest on Sunday, September 17th on Laurel Avenue in Takoma Park. This fun tradition is a fundraiser for the market’s Federal Benefit Match Program and since it started in 2012, has raised almost $10,000 to extend shoppers’ ability to buy fresh local food at the market.

Home bakers and professional bakers are invited to enter their best 1 or 2 crust pies made using seasonal ingredients available at the market – both sweet and savory. Celebrity judges taste the pies and winners are named in the following categories: Best Apple Pie, Best Peach Pie, Best Other Pie – Sweet, Best Other Pie – Savory, Best Kid’s Pie, Most Unusual Pie, Yummy Mess Award, and Professional Baker. Following judging, the market slices up the pies and sells them to the public to raise money for the market’s Federal Benefit Match Program. Tickets for pie slices will be sold inside the farmers market which is adjacent to the event. There are no fees to enter.

In 2022, bakers entered a record 62 pies and over 500 hungry pie eaters attended! There is always a mix of classic pies to very unusual creations – all using seasonal market ingredients. The 2023 bakers are sure to impress!
