What Should Lakeforest Mall’s Future  Be? Let Your Voice Be Heard

The City of Gaithersburg is seeking public input on the future of the Lakeforest Mall site and has released a public input survey this morning — to participate in the survey, please visit https://publicinput.com/Lakeforest?fbclid=IwAR2cwYTA0VtyBZmJO30FIkSYdxlUUgta5nFVO2plzEkgjK7xW9-w2X_BsUM.

The survey, which consists of 19 questions, is extensive and allows for participants to state which amenities would attract them to Lakeforest, chime in on what types of businesses are most needed by Lakeforest’s surrounding community, and even give preferences on future traffic circulation patterns in future Lakeforest development sites.

Back in August, we discussed how the City of Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council passed a resolution that proclaimed a one-year moratorium on development at Lakeforest Mall. Last year, developer WRS, Inc. purchased much of the Lakeforest Mall space, but has been unable to further expand on development due to J.C. Penney, Macy’s, Sears, and Lord & Taylor owning the land that their stores are on.

Despite opposition from WRS, the City of Gaithersburg opted to extend this moratorium to garner public input on the future of the Lakeforest Mall site. The possibilities for the Lakeforest Mall site hold a great deal of importance for the surrounding community, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds.

    Almost anything but more housing.

I’m old enough to remember when it first opened & back then it had an ice skating rink. Something like that again would be useful, ice skating or roller skating, something the whole family can do.

Maybe a movie theatre experience like Arlington Cinema Drafthouse used to have & not have every theatre showing the latest blockbusters only.

Granted, both of those things probably won’t work in these pandemic times but hopefully in the near future.

  3. An outside mall with entertainment. Firepits and a walking area. An outside play area for children, roller skating, ice skaticmng etc.

  4. Something like Montgomery mall or whatever is in Bethesda. With the movie theater and all the nice stores.

  5. I prefer to keep Lakeforest mall for Christmas shopping or walking exercise or family and children enjoy browsing and buying the clothes for school or whatever they need. We won’t have to drive to Montgomery mall in Bethesda, Wheaton mall in Silver Spring, Clarksburg Outfit in Clarksburg and Fsk mall in Frederick. People can ride on buses to Lakeforest mall for Christmas shopping or work or have fun with friends or holidays. Children will be bored or stay home all the time. Let everyone have fun ay Lakeforest mall.

  6. Red line Metro station and town center around it.

  7. make it something fun for people to do and meet up. Like a movie theater some more food places or a bowling alley. Give it a reason for people to come visit. Once the pandemic ends of course

It would be very good if it continued as a mall, it does not exist Another more convenient for this place, covers Rockville, Germantown Gathersburg, open all business back and also cinemas.

  9. Indoor Roller skating would be fun

  10. NO MORE HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS! We have enough of those. We have more houses going up and more shops going out of business. We don’t even have a decent supermarket in the area. Keep the mall. Tear it down and build a better one if you insist. We need a movie theater, pool halls, bowling alley, roller skating rinks, ice skating rinks, bars, restaurants, clothes shops, arcades, dance clubs, martial arts schools, toy stores, parks, performing arts venues, etc. We need just about anything other than more houses! I have lived in MoCo for over 30 years and we continue to see Gaithersburg get gutted and stripped of anything fun in the area. There is absolutely nothing to do here that is any fun anymore.

Not any more appartmenets please !!!! We need community spaces …playground , art center , park , a multi service space for families. No more appartments or condos !!!!! And we need more green space.

  12. I’d like to see Best Medicine Rep, the professional theater company that’s been in the mall for the past three years, have a space in whatever new development is planned. There are movie theaters at Rio and Kentlands. Having a professional theater company is unique, and their mission is dedicated to the City of Gaithersburg.
