MCFRS Respond to Overturned Ambulance

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to Brickyard Rd and Stable Ln in Potomac for the report of a collision involving an overturned ambulance. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident occurred around 9:30am on Friday, October 6 due to the road surface being wet from morning precipitation, and “apparently very slick (likely build up of oil on road).”

The unit was returning from the hospital and there were no patients inside of the ambulance at the time of the collision. The crew of two sustained no serious injuries. We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

Four MoCo Residents Make the Forbes “400 Wealthiest Americans” List

Earlier this year Forbes released its annual “World’s Billionaires List”, which at the time had six Montgomery County residents on it. On Tuesday, Forbes released its list of the 2023’s 400 Wealthiest Americans this past Tuesday, with five Marylanders (four from Montgomery County) making the cut. The Montgomery County residents can be seen below.

Inaugural Festival of Education Set for Oct. 21

Per MCPS: MCPS staff and families are invited to attend the Inaugural USA Festival of Education from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac is hosting the event, which will bring together teachers, researchers and policymakers and include those leading school change in areas such as AI, the science of learning, student and faculty well-being, coaching and school design. This will be the first time the Festival of Education will take place in the U.S.; the event is a renowned event created by Wellington College in the United Kingdom.

The day’s agenda includes more than 50 sessions and a speaker lineup that includes Assistant Secretary of Education Roberto Rodriguez, teachers and administrators from area school districts, and policy leaders including David Steiner, executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy.

Bagels ‘n Grinds and a “Modernized” Potomac Pizza Coming to Potomac Village

Bagels & Grinds is coming to 9812 Falls Road in the Potomac Village shopping center. The New York-style bagel spot will be located in the space that was previously occupied by The Potomac Village Deli. Bagels & Grinds is owned by Adam and Courtney Greenberg, owners of Potomac Pizza and the recently acquired Hunter’s Bar and Grill, both of which are also located in Potomac Village. Bagels ‘n Grinds is expected to open mid-2024. In a press release, the company also announced plans to renovate the original Potomac Pizza location, which includes adding a full bar. The Greenbergs, who took over full operations of Hunter’s Bar and Grill on Wednesday, September 27th with longtime manager and partner Daniel Seaman and Corporate Chef Tennille Middleton (Chef Tee), additionally announced the renovation of the original Potomac Pizza.

MCFRS Respond to Overturned Construction Equipment That Resulted in Fuel Spill in C&O Canal

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to an overturned heavy equipment/excavator with fuel spill at the C&O Canal, about one mile north of Swains Lock in Travilah. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident resulted in fuel spilling into the canal and HazMat is currently assisting. There were no injuries reported. We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

MoCoShow High School Football Game of the Week: Churchill at Urbana (Preview/Prediction)

Urbana is 3-1. They played a very good Middletown team in Delaware and lost which wasn’t unexpected. They edged out a Middletown-MD team which is looking like the weakest Middletown team in years (admittedly the Knights have played admirably so far). They had a decent 28-0 win over TJ. Then last week they went into DC and outlasted Ballou in a 37-34 shootout. Based on their other results, Ballou looks like an average team in DC. It’s definitely been an interesting schedule for the Hawks, and one that’s tough to gauge based on final scores alone. We’ve been hunting for film but it’s been hard to come by; NFHS only has tape from the Middletown-DE and TJ games and we are much more interested in seeing how Urbana looked against the other two teams.

Urbana appears to be predominantly a rushing offense. The QB looks like a decent passer but can contribute to the ground game with his legs. This is good news for a Churchill defense coming off a pretty impressive performance against QO and Iverson Howard, which forced the Cougars to air it out more to score. Alas for Urbana, Keegan Johnson is gone. On the flip side, David Avit has not disappointed whatsoever in regards to his preseason hype, currently sitting at 4th on the state rushing yards leaderboard, tops in MoCo. Even against QO’s ferocious defense he clawed his way to 73 yards on the ground and made some big plays as a receiver too. Perhaps Middletown-DE has a comparable player or two, but it’s looking like he’ll be the best player the Hawks D will line up against at this point in the season. Overall, provided Churchill plays up to their potential, I see the ingredients shaking out for them to pull out a statement win. Prediction: Churchill by 21

Hunter’s Bar and Grill to Reopen on Wednesday, September 27th Following Kitchen Modifications by New Ownership

Last month we let you know that Adam Greenberg, owner of Potomac Pizza, acquired Hunter’s Bar and Grill at 10123 River Rd in the Potomac Village Shopping Center. The restaurant opened as the Hunter’s Inn in 1978 and rebranded to Hunter’s Bar & Grill in 2014. Hunter’s Bar and Grill was closed today (Monday, September 25th) and will be closed again on Tuesday, September 26th as the new owners make kitchen modifications. The restaurant will reopen on Wednesday, September 27th.

Greenberg’s team plans to maintain a majority of Hunter’s menu offerings and will add their own twist by improving current recipes and experimenting with new items based on customer feedback. Additional information can be found in the initial announcement of the acquisition available here.

Historic Potomac Community Celebrates Major Milestone in Reconstruction With the Lifting of Scotland AME Zion Church

To mark and celebrate lifting the 99-year-old Scotland AME Zion Church from its original battered foundation, the Scotland community and civic leaders will host a media event at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The church at 10902 Seven Locks Road, built by hand and opened in 1924 by the Black congregants who lived nearby, was catastrophically flooded on July 7, 2019. The milestone of lifting the church so that a new foundation can be poured marks a significant milestone in the more than four-year effort that has drawn local, state, and regional attention and support. “Those of us who thought the church might be lost forever see this moment as a miracle,” said Chuck Williams, chairman of the capital campaign committee that has raised more than $3 million to date.
