A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of the Odessa Shannon Middle School student who was seriously injured on Wednesday, October 22, during a physical education class in Silver Spring. Montgomery County native Gbenga Akinnagbe is once again drawing national attention as Nurse Jackie has climbed into Netflix’s Top 10. The Showtime series, which originally aired from 2009 to 2015, stars Edie Falco as a brilliant but deeply flawed nurse battling addiction. Akinnagbe joined the cast in seasons 3 and 4, portraying Kelly Slater, a fellow nurse at All Saints Hospital whose presence added new layers of tension and camaraderie to the series’ ensemble.

Wheaton High School head football coach Jermaine Howell has been named the Washington Commanders’ High School Coach of the Week. Howell, who has spent decades coaching and mentoring student-athletes in Montgomery County, was recognized for his leadership, commitment to his players, and impact on the Wheaton community.

When William H. Farquhar Middle School opened its doors in 1968, it marked the start of a new era for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). The Olney school became the first in the county to adopt the “middle school” model, serving grades six through eight, a departure from the traditional “junior high” structure that had long served grades seven through nine.

Roberto Clemente Middle School (RCMS) in Germantown hosted its first-ever Fiesta Latina on Tuesday, October 8th, and by all accounts, the event was a huge success. The all-day celebration brought together students, staff, and community members to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with music, learning, and schoolwide excitement.

During Thursday, October 16th’s Montgomery County Board of Education presentation, Chief Academic Officer Niki T. Porter and Chief of District Operations Adnan Mamoon outlined new considerations for the ongoing Crown Boundary Study, including the potential to use the planned Crown High School as a temporary holding site for other schools undergoing major renovation or reconstruction.
