Celebrate America’s independence with friends & family at SummerFest, Gaithersburg’s illuminating summer festival on the expansive grounds of Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm. The free event takes place on SATURDAY, JULY 1, 2023, from 6 to 11:30 p.m. The festival features live music, food trucks, local breweries, family-friendly activities, all leading up to a spectacular fireworks display & SummerGlo After Party.

SummerFest kicks off at 6 p.m. with Attraction, one of DC’s top dance bands. Enjoy delicious offerings from food and local craft beverage vendors, including Saints Row Brewing, Lone Oak, True Respite, and Waredaca. ATMs available onsite. The air-conditioned Activity Center will serve as a comfort station with indoor bathrooms and space to relax up until 9 p.m.


Gaithersburg native, Grammy Award nominated, and platinum selling musical artist Logic is teaming up with BetterHelp, an online therapy platform, and is offering fans one month of free therapy sessions. Logic is also launching a new podcast, “Logically Speaking,” which will discus mental health, therapy, addiction and music.

“We’re thrilled to partner with such a talented artist who shares our determination to destigmatize mental health issues and expand access to resources,” said Olivier Sinson, Director of Partnerships at BetterHelp. “We’re passionate about making mental health care available to everyone, and this partnership will help us reach even more people who can benefit from therapy.”


Building is Among First U.S. Care Spaces Designed and Built Since COVID; Tower Will Bring Upgrades to Busy Emergency Department, Critical Care Units: Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center broke ground on its new, six-story patient care tower during last month (featured photo shows construction from June 15th). The tower, adjacent to the existing hospital, will bring residents of middle and upper Montgomery County upgraded and modernized Emergency Department; a larger state-of-the art intensive care unit; new medical-surgical patient rooms; and several other features.

The groundbreaking coincided with both National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. Accordingly, the hospital selected 10 caregivers to join Shady Grove’s president, Dan Cochran, and Adventist HealthCare President and CEO Terry Forde for the dirt turning ceremony. The group used shovels with blades decorated by caregivers, representing units connected to services in the new tower.


Sheetz is holding a hiring event today, June 14, at the Holiday Inn Express in Germantown in preparation of the opening of its upcoming store at 751 Progress Way in Gaithersburg. The location, which will be the first Sheetz in Montgomery County, is targeting an August 10th opening date. Last month we reported that Sheetz will also be opening a location in the Walnut Hill shopping center in Gaithersburg in 2024.

Sheetz is a gas station/convenience store that offers made to order food and has over 650 locations throughout Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. According to the company, Sheetz provides “kicked-up convenience while being more than just a convenience store. Sheetz is a mecca for people on the go. If you need to refuel your car or refresh your body, we have what you need to keep you moving on to whatever comes next.”

Kentlands Baby Bar has announced it has pushed back its Grand Opening Celebration to 10am-1pm on Saturday, June 24th (with the soft opening on Saturday, June 17th). “Please join us for a fun day of face painting, balloon animal making, and t shirt decorating while checking out the newest baby friendly spot in Kentlands!” It will open at 375 Main St. in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood.

Carolynne Nowrouzi, founder/owner of Baby Bar, was raised in MoCo. She wanted to provide a space where parents can go with their young children to enjoy a space where they can each grab a bite and just play. The space will offer “food, fun, and socializing” where “you enjoy a coffee and a bite, while your little ones get yummy food and a baby-friendly place to play!” Baby Bar Kentlands will offer fresh fruits and veggies and will have options for babies (puréed or chopped), food for kids like grilled cheese, egg bites, croissants, and more, and food for adults like bagels, muffins, fruit bowls, and more. Hours of Operation: Mon-Sat, 09:30 am – 02:30 pm. Sundays closed.


Gaithersburg’s Novavax, a global company advancing protein-based vaccines with its novel Matrix-MTM adjuvant, has signed a three-year agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute to provide its adjuvant for use in preclinical vaccine research. “We are excited to partner with the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute to include our unique technology in their public health-focused vaccine research efforts,” said John C. Jacobs, President and Chief Executive Officer, Novavax. “Our Matrix-MTM adjuvant is proven to enhance and broaden the immune system response when included in vaccines and is already a key component of COVID and malaria vaccines on the market today. We look forward to partnering more broadly with a variety of organizations so that our technology can benefit vaccine development across many disease areas.”

“The Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute is committed to developing biomedical interventions that address global health concerns for those in the greatest need,” said Emilio Emini, PhD, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute. “We look forward to working with Novavax’s Matrix-MTM adjuvant in some of our early-stage vaccine programs.” The Matrix-M adjuvant is a key component of Novavax’s COVID vaccine and its development-stage vaccines including influenza and COVID and influenza combined. In addition, the adjuvant is being used through partnerships in clinical and preclinical programs across the world for the development of both human and animal vaccines.


An annexation petition, proposing to annex properties that include the Walnut Hill Shopping Center into the City of Gaithersburg, has been filed by Granite Partners. The properties to be annexed are located northeast of MD Route 355 and include the Walnut Hill Shopping Center at 16531 South Frederick Avenue, a restaurant at 8941 North Westland Drive, a vacant parcel at 8939 North Westland Drive, and a portion of the right of way of North Westland Drive.

Granite Partners has submitted Annexation Petition X-9510-2023, proposing to annex three parcels that currently abut the City boundary, along with a portion of the North Westland Drive right of way.  The Annexation Plan proposes several changes to the existing Walnut Hill Shopping Center, including constructing a new freestanding convenience store with accessory gasoline pumps, demolishing an existing small freestanding building on the south side of the property, renovating the exterior of the main shopping center building, and making improvements to the parking lot and landscaping.  No changes are proposed for the other two properties included in the Annexation Petition.


Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg was included in a list of the “Top 10 Retail Experiences” in the country in 2022. With a beautiful lake/boardwalk and long-time favorites like the AMC theaters, Dick’s, Guapo’s, Target, and others still going strong, the retail area has recently welcomed new additions and plans to welcome more in the coming months. Auntie Anne’s Cinnabon: Auntie Anne’s/Cinnabon combination restaurant is now open at 220 Boardwalk Place in Rio, taking over the location that was recently home to Lilly Magilly’s– as the cupcakery is still preparing for a move to a new location. The two brands, popular for their presence in malls, are co-branding to open locations across the country. In recent years, Cinnabon left then returned to Montgomery Mall. There’s also an existing Cinnabon location in Wheaton Mall. Auntie Anne’s has locations at the outlets in Clarksburg, Ellsworth Place Mall, Montgomery Mall, and Wheaton Mall in MoCo.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision with rollover on Hadley Farms Dr and Woodfield Rd in Gaithersburg on Saturday, June 9, around 4pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident involved two vehicles.  Four patients were evaluated and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
