Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken is Coming to MoCo

Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken is coming to 16248 Frederick Rd in Gaithersburg, in the recently renovated Rock Grove Center on the corner of 355 and Shady Grove Rd. The center is also home to Minerva Indian Cuisine, Qdoba, and the recently relocated Dunkin Donuts. The North Carolina-based biscuit chain is known for their buttermilk-brined chicken and currently has Maryland locations in Columbia and Towson. Menu items include biscuit sandwiches, biscuits & gravy, fried chicken strips, and donuts. The restaurant is expected to open this fall.

MoCo’s Only 24-Hour Starbucks in FirstField Shopping Center to Close For One Month in September

MoCo’s only 24-hour Starbucks location at 505 Quince Orchard Rd. in the FirstField Shopping Center (Gaithersburg) will be closed for one month starting on September 9th and lasting until October 9th for renovations, an employee of the store tells us. Employees of the store will all be working at nearby locations for the duration of the closure.

Update: We’ve been informed that the Starbucks located at 300 Spectrum Ave in Gaithersburg will be temporarily moving to 24-hours during the duration of the Firstfield remodeling, beginning September 3rd.

Opening Information for Starbucks in Montgomery Village

The brand new Starbucks in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center is scheduled to open Thursday, August 25. Employees at the location tell us they plan to be open for business by noon. The Starbucks is located at the former site of the Montgomery Village Denny’s at 19290 Montgomery Village Ave.

Earlier this month we reported that Hangry Joe’s will be coming to the space next to the new Starbucks. Hangry Joe’s opened a location at 2533 Ennals Ave in Wheaton back in May and has additional locations opening at 10050 Darnestown Road in the Travilah Square shopping center and at 718-B Rockville Pike.

City of Gaithersburg Updated LED Street Light Conversion (3,750 Lights to be Converted to Energy Efficient LED)

Per the City of Gaithersburg: As part of its strategic plan to enhance environmental sustainability and improve public safety, the City of Gaithersburg has developed a five year project to convert all City-owned street lights from the current high-pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures to the more energy efficient light emitting diode or (LED) fixtures.

LEDs require less maintenance and are more energy efficient, which contributes to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emission associated with their use. Streetlights are important to the safety of our City, and in addition to being more efficient, LEDs also create a more even spread of light, minimizing bright and dark spots. The light appears brighter and whiter, making it easier than traditional yellow looking HPS lights to identify what’s illuminated below. All the fixtures have a color temperature of no more than 3000k. This reduces the sharpness of the light and is deemed best practice by both the International Dark Sky Association and the American Medical Association. The new light fixture will be similar in style to the existing fixtures.

Gaithersburg Construction Worker Purchases $50,000 Winning Scratch Off from Rockville 7-Eleven

“My wife’s winnings were enough for me to buy a game that I had tried a few times with pretty good success,” the 47 year-old construction worker explained to lottery officials. Jose told us that he buys a ticket just about every day when he picks up his wife from work. “It was the VIP CLUB game I had my eye on. It has a $2 million top prize!”

Scratching his ticket, Jose saw what he thought was a $50 match. “I scanned it, just to be sure and right away saw the $50 prize, followed by a bunch of zeros. It was confusing at first, until I realized that I’d won $50,000.” The Montgomery County couple refused to believe what they were seeing until the clerk confirmed it, which he quickly did. “My wife shouted and jumped up in the air.”

Gaithersburg Couple Wins $1 Million Scratch-off Prize

“We were excited. We were happy and we cried,” she said, recalling that the family members surrounded her after the win. The Montgomery County resident is an online sales associate and her husband is a construction worker. She wants to use the money to start her own business. Her adult daughter works at a hair salon and the “Double Winners” might help the daughter start her own salon. “I plan to help family with this money,” she said. “We might take a few vacations, too.”

Some players might stop playing after winning $1 million, but “Double Winners” said she will continue to seek another trip to the Winner’s Circle at Lottery headquarters. “I will continue to buy scratch-offs,” she said.

Labor Day Parade Returns to Gaithersburg With Sue Palka and Our Very Own Mr. MoCo

After a two year hiatus, the City & the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Fire Department celebrate the unofficial end of summer with the 84^th Annual Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 5, 2022, at 1 p.m. This year’s Grand Marshal is Sue Palka, former FOX5 Chief Meteorologist. Alex Tsironis, also known as “Mr. MoCo” and the founder of The MoCoShow, Taste MoCo & MoCoSnow, joins the parade as Master of Ceremonies.

The parade features an assortment of high school marching bands, dance groups, costumed characters, antique cars & fire engines, equestrian units, clowns, and more, all winding their way down East Diamond & Russell Avenues. Note that participation in the Labor Day Parade by groups or organizations other than City of Gaithersburg officials, departments or committees does not constitute City of Gaithersburg endorsement. Food vendors will be located at Olde Towne Plaza and the parking lot next to the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Fire Station.

Ken Mease, Longtime WUSA9 Sportscaster and MoCo Resident, Has Passed Away

Ken Mease, who is recognized by many from his time as a sportscaster with WUSA9 from 1986 until 2003, has passed away at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife, Paulette Mease, 79 , and sons Kert, 48, Bart, 46, and Blake, 38, all of Gaithersburg. Per an obituary written in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Mease was Robert Morris University’s athletic director from 1975-78, where he oversaw the Colonials’ transition from a junior college to a Division I athletic program. He was a sportscaster on and off in Western Pennsylvania from the late 1960s through the mid ‘80s KDKA-TV and WPXI-TV before making the move to the DC area to work for WUSA9.

Per WUSA9, “Ken readily admitted he was not a “flashy” kind of guy when it came to doing his sportscasts. However, Ken’s knowledge of sports and the people who participated were top-notch. He had a delivery style that was easygoing, and he was known for his great storytelling and writing style. Ken also had one of those laughs that just filled a room and a sportscast. At the end of every broadcast, Ken would sign in American Sign Language, ‘I love you.’ His son, Kert, tells us that his father passed away at 1:43 on Monday. The three numbers are also sometimes used in instant messaging as an abbreviation for the phrase ‘I love you.'”

New Signage and Art at Recently Renovated Rock Grove Shopping Center on 355/Shady Grove Rd

Located at one of Montgomery County’s busiest intersections at Shady Grove Road & Route 355, the property at Rock Grove has completed its renovations by adding a new sign and artwork in the parking lot (photos below). The center consists of a medical office building with ground floor retail and a retail building. Renovations to both the retail center and the office building are now complete. The retail center has been structurally altered to provide maximum ceiling height and to increase its presence along this heavily travelled thoroughfare.

Per Promark Partners, an entirely new façade was installed along the length of the 14,000 square foot strip to include larger storefront glass, metal panels, and stone. The office building was also improved with a new stone façade and bright epoxy paint over the precast panels on floors 2 through 5. Additionally, site circulation has been improved and a new exterior stairway from the rear parking lot to the office and retail entrances was constructed.

JK Beer & Wine Now Open in Kentlands

Earlier this summer we let you know that JK Beer and Wine would be moving from its previous location at 800 Rockville Pike to 331 Kentlands Blvd, the former location of Liberty Income Tax, in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood in the space located on the other side of Giuseppi’s. The store officially opened late last week.

JK Beer and Wine opened at its previous Rockville Pike location in the Golden Arcade shopping center, next to Yuan Fu Vegetarian, in the fall of 2021. It took over the space that was previously home to Enterprise. The beer and wine had a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcoholic Beverage Services (ABS) on Thursday, June 16th, where they were approved for a “transfer of location of a Class A, Beer and Wine License, Off Sale Only with delivery, for the premises known as JK Beer & Wine.” Construction didn’t take long and the store is ready to go (photos below).

Charley’s Cheesesteaks is Opening a New Location in Gaithersburg; Will Add Wings to Menu

Charley’s Philly Steaks will be opening at 405 N Frederick Ave, in the location that was recently home to Teriyaki Express. The new Charley’s restaurant will be located in the shopping center anchored by Megamart and FedEx Office, and is currently hiring. We were told by employees of the Lakeforest location that the Lakeforest location will close when this restaurant opens, but a specific date has not yet been provided.

Charley’s now has over 600 stores nationwide. Newer locations have adopted a new menu concept, offering chicken wings and tenders alongside its Philly cheesesteaks, which this location will have. “Tossed-to-order, the wings are made with 10 chef-inspired flavors ranging from Angry Ghost and Nashville Hot to milder options like Zesty Lemon-Lime Rub and Sweet Teriyaki. Customers can order classic or boneless wings and choose from sides including celery sticks, coleslaw, baked beans or Texas toast.”
